Abstract:

A hydrodynamic shaft seal formed with a spiral hydrodynamic channel in which successive turns of the channel are of progressively diminishing volume toward an air side of the seal. The channel is made by forming a spirally extending first cut in a surface of the seal, and forming a spirally extending second cut in the surface of the seal adjacent to the first cut such that the first and second cuts intersect below the surface of the seal to produce a spiral channel. The spiral of the first cut has a lead different from the lead of the second cut such that the channel is of progressively diminishing volume along its length. Alternatively, the second cut may have the same lead as the first cut for the first few turns, after which the lead of the second cut may be reduced, to provide a channel of constant volume for the first few turns, followed by a channel portion of reduced volume.

Abstract:

A dynamic radial shaft seal assembly includes an inner wear sleeve having a cylindrical inner wall with a bore sized for receipt about a shaft and an outer running surface. The inner wear sleeve has a flange extending radially outwardly from the running surface. The assembly further includes an outer case having cylindrical outer wall configured for receipt in a housing and a rim extending radially inwardly from the outer wall. An elastomeric body is attached to the rim. The elastomeric body includes a main seal lip configured to engage the outer running surface of the inner wear sleeve and a plurality of thrust pads extending axially from the rim for engagement with the flange. The thrust pads are spaced circumferentially from one another by gaps. The elastomeric body further includes a first dust exclusion lip extending axially from the leg and bridging the gaps.

Abstract:

A gasket includes an internal stiffener wire which maintains the semi-rigid shape of the gasket while it is in storage or during the process of its installation between two workpieces. Rigid compression limiter rings are attached to the wire by a tack weld or by semi-open loops formed in the wire. The loops mate with peripheral grooves in the rings. Each ring is secured within a side opening in each loop with a sliding or snap-fit connection. The rings may be loosely held within the loops to allow the rings to self align themselves with positioning pins provided in an injection mold which subsequently forms the gasket material around the wire and rings.

Abstract:

An annular wear sleeve for a shaft seal is fabricated of an elastically deformable metal material and includes an annular body portion and an end flange portion. The sleeve is slightly oversized relative to the shaft on which it is installed to provide a low force slip-fit installation on the shaft. Once installed, the end flange is elastically deformed, imparting a radially inward bending force on the body portion causing the inner surface of the wear sleeve to constrict about and engage the outer surface of the shaft, providing intimate metal-to-metal contact therebetween to dissipate heat from the seal member and to secure the wear sleeve against rotation on the shaft in service. Releasing the deformation force on the end flange enables the wear sleeve to recover its elastic deformation, causing the wear sleeve to release the constricting engagement with the shaft enabling it to be dismounted from the shaft with low force in the same manner as was required for installation.

Abstract:

An isolator for damping heat and vibrations between a heat shield and heat source is provided. The isolator includes a housing and a washer. The housing surrounds a center opening and extends axially from a first end portion to a second end portion and includes an intermediate portion therebetween. The housing has a serpentine shape. The first end portion and the intermediate portion of the housing clamp a washer therebetween, and the second end portion and the intermediate portion of the housing clamp the heat shield therebetween. The washer includes a plurality of through openings between an outer periphery and the center opening for enhancing vibration dampening and minimizing heat transfer from the heat source to the heat shield. The isolator optionally includes a collar member disposed along the center opening of the washer to facilitate mounting of the isolator to the heat source.

Abstract:

A labyrinth seal assembly, bearing assembly therewith, and method of construction thereof, has an outer rigid carrier and an inner sleeve. The carrier has an outer cylindrical flange and a radially inwardly extending leg and the sleeve has a cylindrical wall and a radially outwardly extending flange. A seal body is attached to at least one of the leg and the flange, wherein a labyrinth passage extends between the seal body and the sleeve, from an air side of the assembly to an oil side of the assembly, during normal use of the assembly.
