Abstract:

Safety is one of the most desired attributes of an algae control agent for ornamental water features, since the water is often consumed by wildlife and pets, and children sometimes come in contact with the water. The present invention safely prevents the growth of algae in ornamental water features, and does not add chemicals to the water, but controls algae by using insoluble adsorbents to remove essential micronutrients necessary for algal growth. The invention can be used in still or recirculating water features of all types, including bird baths, water fountains, artificial streams, ornamental waterfalls, and small ponds. Since no compounds are being released into the water, the algae control is very long-lasting, and is also maintenance-free, with no action necessary on the part of the user even when evaporation or removal of debris requires refilling the feature.

Certain transition metal salts, such as copper sulfate are surprisingly effective in protecting sugar nectar even at micronutrient levels, below the level consumed by hummingbirds in their natural diet. The invention prevents the formation of unhealthy microbial growth, reduces the need for frequent changing, and keeps the sugar nectar fresh and healthy.

Abstract:

A natural non-toxic ant-repelling gel is created by combining certain fatty acids with a thickening agent. The gel has the surprising ability to be used safely around food, children and pets, because it is derived from an edible source. The gel is applied to permanently block or repel ants. Since this is an oil-based gel composition, it is also long-lasting and water-proof, so it can be used outside. One particular use is to block the path of ants attempting to access a hummingbird feeder or nectar bird feeder.
