  • Aqueous Based Coating Compositions Having Improved Metallic Pigment Orientation

    view source
  • US Patent:
    53569733, Oct 18, 1994
  • Filed:
    Aug 31, 1992
  • Appl. No.:
    7/938912
  • Inventors:
Dennis Taljan - North Ridgeville OH
James E. Poole - Gibsonia PA
Marvis E. Hartman - Pittsburgh PA
  • Assignee:
PPG Industries, Inc. - Pittsburgh PA
  • International Classification:
    C08K 511
  • US Classification:
    524314
  • Abstract:
An aqueous based coating composition contains a polymeric film-forming resin and as an additive from about 1 to about 40 percent by weight based on the resin solids of the composition of an oligomeric ester having an acid value of from about 100 to about 500 of the structure: ##STR1## where X is the residue of a polyol containing from 1 to 50 carbon atoms per hydroxyl group after reaction with an acid or an anhydride, R is an organic moiety from the acid or anhydride and A has an average value of about 2 or greater. The coating compositions are particularly advantageous as metallic pigmented coating compositions for automotive basecoat applications because they exhibit excellent resistance to mottling, have good flop and have reduced sensitivity to fluctuations in relative humidity.

  • US Patent:
    50682881, Nov 26, 1991
  • Filed:
    May 31, 1990
  • Appl. No.:
    7/531380
  • Inventors:
Dennis N. Taljan - North Ridgeville OH
    R. Douglas Price - North Royalton OH
  • Assignee:
PPG Industries, Inc. - Pittsburgh PA
  • International Classification:
    C08L 6300
  • US Classification:
    525155
  • Abstract:
Curable compositions comprising blends of active hydrogen-containing polymers and curing agents therefor are disclosed. The blends comprise 5 to 60 percent by weight of a free radical initiated addition polymer prepared from a mixture of monomers comprising: 1) an epoxy monomer represented by the formula: ##STR1## where R stands for tertiary aliphatic hydrocarbon group having 4 to 26 carbon atoms, 2) a polymerizable alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, and 3) optionally at least one other polymerizable alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated monomer. Also present in the blend is 10 to 50 percent by weight of an acrylic copolymer different than the addition polymer mentioned above prepared from a mixture of monomers comprising: 1) a monomer of the formula: ##STR2## where R. sub. 2 is a polymerizable unsaturated hydrocarbon group, R. sub. 3 is hydrogen or C. sub. 1 to C. sub.
