Abstract:
The present invention generally relates to chips, particularly microfluidic chips, that are rotatable and/or have a generally circular or rotationally symmetric geometry. The chips may be substantially planar in certain instances. In some cases, the chips of the invention can have more than one reaction site, which can, for example, contain cells. The reaction site can be very small, in some cases with a volume of less than about 1 ml. Reactions, transport, and/or other manipulations within the chip can be facilitated by rotating the chip, for example, at tens, hundreds or thousands of revolutions per minute (RPM). In some cases, data may also be written to and/or read from the chip. The chips of the invention can be used, for example, to move fluid from one portion of a chip to another, to concentrate and/or separate a mixture (e.g., a cell suspension), to lyse or fractionate a cell, or the like.

Abstract:
A method for making a composite polyamide membrane including a porous support and a thin film polyamide layer, wherein the method includes: applying a polar solution comprising a polyfunctional amine monomer and a non-polar solution comprising a polyfunctional acyl halide monomer to a surface of a porous support and interfacially polymerizing the monomers to form a thin film polyamide layer; and exposing the thin film polyamide layer to nitrous acid; and wherein the method is characterized by treating the thin film polyamide layer with a halogenated benzene compound represented by formula (a) wherein: X is selected from a halogen; Y is selected from hydrogen, carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid; and A, A′, A″ and A″′ are independently selected from: halogen, hydrogen, hydroxyl, alkoxy, ester, amino, keto-amide, and an alkyl group with the proviso that at least one of A, A′, A″ and A″′ is selected from: hydroxyl, amino, keto-amide, and wherein the substituent in the ortho or para to at least one of A, A′, A″ and A″′ is hydrogen.

Abstract:
A method for making a composite polyamide membrane comprising a porous support and a thin film polyamide layer, wherein the method includes the step of applying a polyfunctional amine monomer and polyfunctional acyl halide monomer to a surface of the porous support and interfacially polymerizing the monomers to form a thin film polyamide layer, wherein the step of applying the polyfunctional acyl halide monomer to the porous support includes the step of combining the polyfunctional acyl halide monomer with a non-polar solvent at a concentration of at least 0.18 weight percent to form a coating solution which is applied to the surface of the porous support, and wherein the interfacial polymerization is conducted in the presence of a tri-hydrocarbyl phosphate compound which is provided in a molar ratio of at least 0.5:1 with the polyfunctional acyl halide monomer. Many additional embodiments are described including membranes made from the subject method and applications for such membranes.
