Adjustable, flexible mitral and tricuspid annuloplasty rings having internal drawstrings that emerge from the rings on the annular faces so that the drawstring knots are out of the bloodstream, the drawstrings being contained in clearly marked channels, the mitral ring having a curved semi-flexible stiffener member in the anterior segment to maintain intertrigonal distance during implantation, the plane of the anterior segment lying at an angle of about 30. degree. -75. degree. to the plane of the posterior segment, arcing up across the anterior leaflet to prevent outflow tract obstruction.

Abstract:
This invention relates to a novel and improved chest drainage apparatus characterized by a bottle housing a fluid collection chamber and a fluid inlet connectable to receive fluid and air from a chest cavity to be drained, air inlet and exhaust ports downstream of the fluid inlet open to the atmosphere within the air space above the fluid collected, and a U-tube between the fluid inlet and the air exhaust port capable of collecting and retaining an amount of fluid effective to provide a visual indication of any air flow into the system; a subassembly including an air chamber containing a check valve effective when connected to receive air from the exhaust port of the bottle to prevent backflow thereof into the system; and a negative pressure relief valve connected to the air intake port automatically operative to limit the negative pressure, if any, in the air space above the fluid to a predetermined maximum. The invention also encompasses such an apparatus wherein the subassembly is detachable from the bottle and the latter is used by itself in inverted position as a reservoir of chest fluids that may be reintroduced back into the body. Also included in the apparatus in its preferred form are a positive pressure relief valve downstream of the check valve in the air chamber automatically operative to maintain the air pressure in the latter at or below a predetermined maximum.

Abstract:
This invention relates to an improved chest fluid drainage bottle of the type having a fluid collection chamber connectable to receive fluid sucked from the patient's chest, the improvement consisting of an improved air leak detection system characterized by a fluid filled U-tube downstream of the air space overlying the fluid collecting chamber cooperating therewith to define an air leak detector substantially insensitive to small intermittent variations in upstream pressure while, at the same time, providing an observer with a reliable visual indication of a continuous upstream leak. The improvement also encompasses an anti-splash baffle adjacent the outlet of the U-tube effective to prevent the fluid therein from leaving same and, perhaps, entering the vacuum system upon the application of larger than normal intermittent upstream positive pressure surges.
Sternal Retractor With Attachments For Mitral & Tricuspid Valve Repair

Abstract:
A sternal retractor for applying an opening force evenly along the respective edges of a patient's sternum during heart surgery comprises a curved rack having a length, a width, and a thickness, wherein the rack is curved in the thickness direction, hinged arms mounted to the rack, a cog mechanism for forcing one of the arms to move along the rack, and retractor blades pivotally mounted to the arms. An atrial retractor which are used to retract the left and right atrium connects to an arm of the sternal retractor by an H-shaped mounting rod assembly. The assembly comprises two elongated rods mounted in spaced parallel relationship by a clamp proximate the center of the rods. A ball clamp associated with the sternal retractor and atrial retractor comprises locking discoid blocks for releasably interconnecting a plurality of rods together.
