The present invention relates to pleomorphic cells (“morphotes”), which exhibit morphologic and genetic characteristics of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, including resemblance to prokaryotic cells at the unicellular level, and resemblance to eukaryotic cells at the multicellular level due to their ability to self-organize in vitro into multicellular, mammalian tissue-like patterns consisting of tissue-like sheets, capillary-like networks, and trabecular (spongy) bone-like structures. Morphotes have a number of applications in the diagnostic medical, therapeutic medical, biological, biomaterials, bionanotechnological, and industrial fields.
Methods For The Isolation Of Bacteria Containing Eukaryotic Genes
Bacteria containing eukaryotic and/or viral genes, and often having highly pleiomorphic morphology, are obtained by culturing virally-infected eukaryotic cells under aseptic, low oxygen conditions. The bacteria so produced express products encoded by the eukaryotic genes. Analyses indicate that several isolates obtained from culturing retrovirally-infected human brain capillary endothelial cells express human-specific genes previously mapped to widely separated human chromosomes.
Cabinet Allowing Object To Be Viewed From Multiple Angles
The present invention provides a display cabinet for displaying an object from a plurality of views, in which the observer's own image is not reflected. According to the present invention, at least one reflective surface such as mirrors are provided within a cabinet. The mirrors define an internal display chamber within the cabinet, with one of the faces of the display chamber constituting a viewing window having a special coating which allows some of the interior light to escape the display chamber. The lighting in the display chamber is controlled so as to ensure that more light exits the viewing window than enters from outside the display cabinet, thus ensuring that the observer's image is not reflected.

Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method of amplifying in vitro stemcells. In this method hematopoietic CD34. sup. + stem and progenitor cells are isolated from human bone marrow and contacted with endothelial cells. The contacted stem cells and endothelial cells are cultured in the presence of at least one cytokine in an amount sufficient to support amplification/expansion of the hematopoietic CD34. sup. + stem and progenitor cells. This method produces increased yields of hematopoietic CD34. sup. + stem and progenitor cells which can be used in human therapeutics.

Abstract:
This application is directed to methods which allow for encapsulation of an array of biological materials under physiological conditions that are relevant given a biological context and the compositions made using those methods. These reconstituted biological materials encompass: a) purified proteins that can bind to the lipid membranes inside and outside of vesicles based on the electrostatic charge; b) purified cytosolic proteins that position themselves in the lumen of the vesicles, c) mammalian cell extracts with an array of cytosolic protein content, among other contents and d) small biological molecules such as DNA and RNA as well as fluorescent dyes/probes. These vesicles can be used to simulate cells in drug discovery methods as well as useful in administering drugs and other compositions to cells in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract:
Described are method of treating or preventing lung disease in a subject comprising the steps of: administering to a subject an agent that modulates the expression, the amount, or activity, of adenine nucleotide translocase (ANT) in the lungs of a subject. The treatment enhances airway surface (ASL) thickness in the lung of a subject compared to a lung of a reference subject that has not been given the agent.
