Abstract:
A device which serves as an artificial pancreas comprises a hollow fiber having an inner diameter of about 5 mm which is surrounded by islets of Langerhans enclosed in a housing. The islets are suspended in a semi-solid matrix which ensures desired distribution of the cells about the hollow fiber. The hollow fiber and suspended islets are enclosed in a housing which further aids the desired distribution of islets about the hollow fiber. The hollow fiber has a porosity which selectively allows passage of substances having a molecular weight of less than about 100,000 Daltons. The semi-solid matrix in which the islets are embedded and suspended is formed of an appropriate supporting material such as alginate or agar.

Abstract:
An automated system for casting hollow fiber membranes into a variety of prescribed shapes, including spiral, linear, circular and rectangular. The system also has the capability to change the configuration during casting, which increases productivity. A co-extrusion die is rotated over a stationary coagulation bath A computer is used to control the motion of the die to make a membrane with the desired shape The nozzle is oriented in a manner that will compensate for distortions that occur in wall thickness in the area of a bend. In addition, the nozzle's annulus is offset to make the leading portion of the annulus slightly thicker and the trailing portion thinner at the point where the fluids exit the nozzle, which results in a uniformly symmetric wall thickness. A system embodying the invention includes X, Y and. theta. -directional servomotors 1A-1C (FIG.

Abstract:
A radiographic imaging system coupled to a movable table for repositioning subject matter at the conclusion of a scanning of an area of the subject matter. The imaging system is further coupled to a plural axis recording system in which a recording implement, such as a flashing light source, is driven in synchronism with a scanning motion of the imaging system along a recording medium such as a photographic film. Controller circuitry is coupled between the movable table, the imaging system and the recording system for synchronizing their respective operations and for selectably scaling the movement of a drive unit relative to the movement of the scanning. A large subject such as a complete human being may be scanned by repositioning the subject and the movable table at the conclusion of each of a sequence of area scans of the imaging system, and by scaling the output of the scanning system so that the successively scanned regions of the subject can be recorded upon a single standard size x-ray film plate.

Abstract:
A biocompatible capsule for containing cells for implantation is prepared containing an inner support that provides tensile strength to the capsule. The capsule may be a tubular semipermeable membrane such as a hollow fiber membrane having both ends sealed. A rod shaped inner support extends through the lumen and ends of the rod are attached to sealed ends of the fiber. Prior to sealing one fiber end, cells are introduced into the lumen. Cells within the capsule may be suspended in a liquid medium or immobilized in a hydrogel or extracellular matrix material, and biologically active molecules can be delivered from the capsule to surroundings or from the surroundings into the capsule. The inner support may have external features such as flutes or a roughened or irregularly-shaped surface, and may be coated with cell-adhesive substance or a cell-viability-enhancing substance. The inner support may be a hollow tube having two channels, one communicating with a filling port that permits injecting cells through the support into the capsule and the other communicating with another port that allows gas to escape through the support as cells are introduced.

Abstract:
A biocompatible capsule for containing cells for implantation is prepared containing an inner support that provides tensile strength to the capsule. Cells within the capsule are suspended in a liquid medium or immobilized in a hydrogel or extracellular matrix material, and are surrounded by a semipermeable membrane across which biologically active molecules can be delivered from the capsule to surroundings or from the surroundings into the capsule. The inner support may be formed as an integral part of the capsule during a coextrusion process to form the capsule. Alternatively, the inner support may be a discrete component within a tube having top and bottom sealing fittings that are linked withing the tube by the support.

Abstract:
The present invention provides vaccine compositions and methods of producing such compositions. Other embodiments of the invention include methods of treating a pathogen infection, methods of vaccinating a subject against a pathogen infection, and methods for treating an antibiotic-resistance bacterial infection in a subject in need thereof. In further embodiments, the invention includes methods of decreasing the level of a pathogen in a subject having a pathogen infection, methods of increasing the surviving rate of a subject having a pathogen infection, methods of reducing the level of pain associated with a pathogen infection, and methods of reducing the level of distress associated with a pathogen infection in a subject in need thereof. Novel scaffold compositions and opsonin-bound or lectin-bound pathogen compositions, and uses thereof, are also provided herein.
