Abstract:A needle guard attachment for a syringe. The guard has a pair of concentric members one of which establishes fluid communication between the needle and the syringe body. Abstract:A drug delivery system for implantation into a living body having a pressure actuated infusion pump and an adjustable flow regulator. The regulator comprises a body having a regulator cavity divided by a diaphragm into two chambers. One chamber serves as a pressure sensor and the other as a conduit through which fluid flows. The outlet from the conduit chamber can be sealed by diaphragm movement as a function of pressure increase or the flow restricted. The outlet itself is mounted on an adjustable fitting that is movable relative to the diaphragm. The distance between the outlet and the diaphragm may be set as a calibration of the regulator.

Abstract:Apparatus for injecting infusate into a reservoir implanted in the human body comprises a housing from which projects a hollow needle. The needle is slidably mounted in the housing and spring biased to its extended position in which the inner end of the needle is closed by a valve. The needle is extended and locked during injection through the skin and septum of an implanted reservoir, after which the needle lock is released to permit automatic function of the apparatus when the needle hits a stop behind the septum. The resultant needle setback opens the valve permitting fluid to flow through the needle into the reservoir.

Abstract:Apparatus for locating the septum through which an implanted prosthetic device is refilled with infusate includes means mounted in the device in juxtaposition with the septum for producing an energy pattern that extends outside the body. The pattern is shaped so as to indicate the location under the skin of the septum of the implanted device. The apparatus also includes a small portable detector which is responsive to the radiation pattern emanating from the body. The detector is arranged so that when manipulated over the patient's body at the approximate site of the implanted device, it designates the location of the septum.

Abstract:Infusion apparatus includes a housing with an infusate chamber in the housing and means for conducting infusate from the chamber through a restrictive outlet passage to an additional small chamber having an entrance port closed by a self-sealing penetrable septum. An exit tube from the small chamber leads directly to a cannula at the infusion site so that liquid can be injected into the small chamber through its septum and delivered directly to the infusion site without backflowing into the infusate chamber.
