    Apparatus for stripping ceramic coatings from the surfaces of articles. The apparatus includes a dedicated pressure vessel, such as an autoclave, which is maintained at an elevated temperature. Caustic solution is preheated to a first elevated temperature before injecting it into the autoclave, and the caustic solution is filtered and cooled after use in the autoclave. The articles are stripped of coating by maintaining the articles at an elevated temperature and pressure for a predetermined time. Various options include the use of analytical equipment to maintain the chemistry of the caustic solution and use of a volatile organic solution to prepressurize the autoclave and shorten cycle time. The autoclave is maintained in a nitrogen chamber to minimize the risks associated with volatile components. The articles are transferred to a separate pressure vessel after completion of the stripping operation so that the autoclave used for stripping can be maintained at an elevated temperature, thereby shortening the cycle time for stripping of additional articles.

Analytical models calculate parameters based on measurements of other parameters.     Low-particulate dihydric aromatic compounds such as bisphenol-A that can be used in the synthesis of low-particulate polycarbonates are prepared by introducing into a desorber column containing a non-aggregate packing material an adduct of bisphenol and phenol and optionally a stripping gas. The column is maintained at an operating temperature that is sufficiently high and an operating pressure that is sufficiently low such that the adduct is distilled. The stream of phenol and the stripping gas is recovered from the top of the column. A second stream containing bisphenol that is substantially free of added particulate matter is recovered from the bottom of the column. This purified stream of bisphenol-A can further be used in a method of producing optical-grade polycarbonate.

    An apparatus for evaluating an associated semiconductor sample having two electrically distinct regions with a junction region disposed therebetween includes a laser for injecting carriers into a sample region, an electrical bias for impressing electrical fields on the sample, and a detector for detecting luminescence. A second laser is provided for injecting carriers into a second sample region opposite the first region. A method includes the steps of: optically generating carriers in a region, generating a drift field in the region that effectuates carrier drift toward the junction, and measuring the optical radiation generated by carrier recombination in the junction region. Preferably, the method also includes optically generating carriers in a second region and generating a drift field in the second region that effectuates carrier drift toward the junction. Typically, the two drift fields are generated together by applying voltage between the two regions.
