Jessica Tata Sentenced To 80 Years In Prison, Ordered To Pay Fine
Twenty-four-year-old Tata was convicted in connection with the death of 16-month-old Elias Castillo last week. Elias was one of seven children whom Tata left unsupervised at her home while she went to a nearby Target store to shop. Her shopping activities were captured on surveillance cameras.
Sixteen-month-old Elias Castillo and three other children died in the Feb. 24, 2011, fire. Prosecutors said a pot of oil that Tata left on a hot burner started the fire after she left the children alone to go shopping. She faces a penalty of five years to life in prison for the conviction.
Tata is facing up to life in prison. She was convicted last week of felony murder in the death of 16-month-old Elias Castillo, whom she left at home with six other children while she went shopping. A pan of oil on a stove top burner fueled the blaze.
