Cities are breeding bigger spiders, say scientists
Elizabeth Lowe, the PhD student who led the study, says that despite our fear of creepy crawlies, the increasing size of the golden orb-weaver is a positive: web-spinning spiders like this are responsible for making sure insect populations dont get out of hand, theyre a vital food source for birds

City Lights Have Urban Spiders Bulking Up in Comparison to Rural Spiders
Lead author, Elizabeth Lowe, wrote in The Conversation about the findings. The fact that some spiders are loving cities is cause for hope. In fact, in order to maintain biodiversity in cities we need to be able to support more diverse populations of spiders and other invertebrates.
"The landscape characteristics most associated with larger size of spiders were hard surfaces and lack of vegetation," said Elizabeth Lowe, a Ph.D student studying arachnids at the University of Sydney.

City spiders bigger and more fertile than rural counterparts: Study
Animals which benefit from urbanization are called urban exploiters, and these species (including the spiders from this study) do better in urban areas than their natural habitats," Elizabeth Lowe, a doctoral candidate at the University of Sydney's School of Biological Sciences and leader of the st
Artificial night lighting has many implications for spider fitness as it leads to local increases in insect abundance, and increased prey capture for spiders in lit habitats, wrote lead author Elizabeth Lowe from the University of Sydney, Australia, and colleagues.
