In September 1998 I stood on the beach with my surfboard under my arm amid the broken septic tanks, and collapsed houses left by Tropical Storm Frances. It was only a small storm but it badly eroded the coast in Galveston and Brazoria counties, leaving debris from over 100 houses on the beach. I realized that something had to be done or my two grand daughters would have no public beach to enjoy as I had done for over 40 years. I immediately began to organize the surfing community to become a political force for Texas coastal preservation.
My goal was 5 Surfrider Foundation chapters in 5 years. It wasn't that easy. Starting in 1999 we added a new chapter every other year until we had 4 chapters. Our 5th chapter received their charter two years ago.
What have I learned from this? If you know what you are talking about, have reasonable goals, and use the internet to create a state-wide network - you can make things happen in Texas. You can make a difference.
