Abstract:

The present invention provides a fast and efficient method for determining the three-dimensional conformation of a protein. The steps of the method of the invention include: 1) formation of physical distance constraints, e. g. , forming intramolecular chemical crosslinks of known size between residues of a protein; 2) enriching the number of the molecules that have intramolecular chemical crosslinks in the reaction pool, e. g. , using size separation to remove proteins with intermolecular bonds; 3) exposing the enriched reaction pool to a protease that cuts the protein at specific sites to produce peptide fragments; 4) measuring the size of the peptide fragments to determine linkage sites with a certain spatial relationship in the protein; and 5)interpreting the data produced to determine spatial geometry and protein structure based on the deduced spatial relationship of the linkage sites. The information is preferably analyzed with aid from a computer system, which can be used to generate and/or analyze distance constraints between amino acids.

Abstract:

A porous composite block is provided that contains at least two groups of binding agent particles. The first binding agent particles have an average particle size between about 5 μm and 200 μm. The second binding agent particles have an average particle size no larger than half the average particle size of the first binding agent particles and also between about 10 nm and 30 μm. The porous composite block can also contain active grains and active granules such that the granules are smaller than the grains. The grains and the granules can be capable of treating water. A method of forming a porous composite block and a water treatment system are also provided.

Abstract of the DisclosureA system for treating a fluid is described. The system includes a fluid source and a porous composite block with at least one binding agent in particle form, an inlet and an outlet. All binding agents together constitute less than approximately 15 weight percent of the porous composite block. A porous composite block is also described. The block includes a first component in grain form and at least one binding agent in particle form, wherein, on average, than about 20 μm, and all binding agents together constitute less than approximately 15 weight percent of the porous composite block. In other arrangements, on average, at least one dimension of the particles is less than about 10 μm. In still other arrangements all binding agents together constitute less than approximately 10 weight percent of the porous composite block. The first granular component can be activated carbon. The block can also contain a second granular component such as activated alumina, activated bauxite, fuller’s earth, diatomaceous earth, silica gel, calcium sulfate, ceramic particles, zeolite particles, inert particles, sand, surface charge-modified particles, metal oxides, metal hydroxides, and mixtures thereof.
