I am a single link in an immensely long and unbroken chain of successful pairings and reproductions and survivals to next generation reproduction. My parents got together and made me, and both of their parents did the same to make them. Four grandparents needed eight great-grandparents to reproduce successfully, in order that I should be here today. It goes on, backwards through time, right through the approximately two hundred thousand years of human existence, and then back through our evolutionary tree to the primordial sludge. When you consider how many generations of successful breedings have actually happened to make up my particular unbroken chain for that whole period, and how easy it would have been for the chain to be broken at some point by one person dying before successfully reproducing, it’s extremely unlikely that I, specifically and uniquely me, should be here today. Oh, and you, too.

Erick Sánchez is a painter living and working in New York City. He was born in 1973 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. In 1996, Sánchez emerged as a self tough artist after helping a friend to paint a mural. In 2002, he enrolled in The San Juan Art Students League in Puerto Rico. He studied with Luis Ivorra and Rafael Rivera Ortiz. In 2005, Sánchez decided to study at The Art Students League of New York for an intensive summer program. That’s when his art really changed and started to grow. In 2008, Erick moved from Puerto Rico to New York and reenrolled at the ASL. A year later he was awarded a study scholarship with the artist/instructor Bruce Dorfman. Erick has participated in several exhibitions and received various awards among others: The Fantasy Fountain Painting Grant, The Joan M. Rosenberg Memorial Scholarship and The Jean Gates Foundation Painting Award in New York. Also, The Marchutz Residency Summer 2011 Program at the Institute for American Universities in Aix-en-Provence, France. Have had solo shows: Dangerous Land at the 2011 Governors Island Art Fair in New York, The Journey: Point of No Return at The Museum of The Americas in Puerto Rico , Alternate Routes at The Rhode Island University, Providence Campus and Esencia at The San Juan Museum, San Juan Bautista Gallery in Puerto Rico. Sánchez has been selected on various group shows: Diálogo 365, Ice Box Gallery at the Crane Arts Building in Philadelphia, Ivan Loboguerrero . Alejandro de Narvaez . Erick Sánchez . Recent Works at Jorge Sori Fine Art in Florida, Malescapes . Tria The Suchman-Bart-Metheny Gallery in New York and MOLAA Awards and Auction 08 at The Museum of Latin American Art in California. Erick Sánchez, with his new proposal "Dangerous Land" has reinvented the contemporary landscape painting. He is considered by some to be the precursor of the 21st century traditional landscape. “Dangerous Land” is a response to environmental, social, political and inhumane worldwide contemporary issues. Sánchez gives shape to an unstable space that no longer has or will disappear because of globalization, industrialization and global warming. This leads to natural disasters extinguishing life and nature. These events are the consequences of human behavior. Theologists call it the Apocalypse; the Rapture. He call it destiny. The materials he’s using on this series of paintings, collages and installations are liquid and powder pigments in raw, various acrylic mediums, emulsion, recycled rubber, glass beads, copper and aluminum leaf, black magnum, urethane, stainless steel, silver and aluminum powder among others.
