Abstract:

A probe or accessory incorporating the features of the subject invention includes a communications arrangement for communicating topology-related data to a host instrument connected to the probe or accessory. The topology-related data describes the probe or accessory as a network comprising multiple paths from the probe tip to host instrument input connector. Each path is associated with a feature of the probe or accessory, and only one path may be active at any given time. Each feature is described by a unique number, called a âtagâ. New tags may be assigned when necessary so long as existing tags are not disturbed. A probe or accessory in accordance with the subject invention transmits a list of âRequired Tagsâ to the host instrument. Each required tag is associated with a pathway within the probe or accessory. The host instrument may only exercise those paths for which all required tags are understood, or those for which no required tag is designated.

Abstract:

A method for employing a driver in a router to communicate between the routers operating system and network processor. The driver appears to the operating system as a device driver for a conventional network interface. The driver also registers with the network processor and appears itself as a forwarding interface. Control information received the network processor is forwarded to the operating system by way of the driver using the network processors existing forwarding mechanisms, and control information from the operating system is sent to the network processor by way of the driver.

Abstract:

The present invention defines an object-oriented programming model appropriate for both ASIC-based networking silicon as well as network processors. This model obtains this range of expressiveness by identifying the fundamental units of packet processing performed by underlying hardware (either ASIC or network processor). Software objects, called Stages, are then created to encapsulate and represent these fundamental units of packet processing. Using this API, a directed graph of packet flow is formed using the Stage objects. This directed graph of packet flow models packet processing performed by underlying forwarding hardware. As a result, additional services can be added or deleted from a single switching/routing device without affecting the underlying forwarding engine hardware.

Abstract:

In one embodiment, a method is provided. The method of this embodiment includes generating, by a processor that includes a plurality of processing engines capable of executing program instructions, a packet. The method of this embodiment also includes transmitting the packet to at least one of the processing engines.
