  • Tapered Bioabsorbable Interference Screw And Method For Endosteal Fixation Of Ligaments

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6629977, Oct 7, 2003
  • Filed:
    Nov 15, 2000
  • Appl. No.:
    09/711964
  • Inventors:
Eugene M. Wolf - San Rafael CA
  • Assignee:
    Arthrex, Inc. - Naples FL
  • International Classification:
    A61B 1788
  • US Classification:
    606 73, 128898, 606 60, 623 1314, 623 1318
  • Abstract:
A bioabsorbable interference screw having a tapered profile which extends along substantially the entire length of the screw. The tapered profile makes the screw easy to insert while providing superior fixation resulting from a progressively increasing diameter. Upon insertion, the screw engages cortical bone at the back end of the bone tunnel and fills all but 5-10 mm. of the tunnel, thereby providing increased fixation strength while also promoting fast healing. The screw includes a head provided with a specially designed drive socket with radially extending slots at its outer end for receiving corresponding protrusions on the shaft of screwdriver. The drive socket optimizes the torque capacity of the screw. To maintain wall thickness, the socket has a taper corresponding to the tapered outer profile of the screw. The taper of the socket also permits easy insertion of the tip and shaft of the driver into the screw.

  • International Classification:
    A61F 240
  • US Classification:
    623 1914
  • Abstract:
A variable tilt angle shoulder prosthesis includes a variable tilt angle, comprising a head component including a proximal portion configured to interface with a glenoid process and a distal surface including a socket depression defined therein; a humeral shaft; a humeral neck at the end of the shaft including a proximal ball end which is configured to couple with the socket depression of the humeral head as a ball-in socket joint, adjustable, upon coupling with said humeral neck, to a selected tilt angle among a plurality of tilt angles relative to an elongate direction of said shaft to substantially match said prosthesis to a natural tilt angle of a humeral head of a patient.

A shoulder arthroplasty apparatus includes a stemless humeral head for coupling to a previously cut humeral surface. The base of the humeral head has a stabilizing base extension that is impacted into a cancellous region of the cut humeral surface. A preferred base extension has a cruciform shape including two planar fins intersecting at or near the center of the base. The periphery of the humeral head is formed to match the cortical margins of the cut humeral surface. The humeral head is preferably cemented or press-fit to the humeral surface. The humeral head has any of a range of peripheral shapes and sizes matching the specific shape and size of the anatomic neck of a humeral surface. A method for performing the shoulder arthroplasty includes a new surgical approach using a guide to cut accurately and safely on the anatomic neck of the humerus and another guide to properly orient the reaming of the glenoid.
