Japanese immigrant Takako Ueda and her American spouse, Frances Herbert, got word Tuesday that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services decided to defer action on deportation proceedings against Ueda, whose visa had expired.
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Frances Herbert and her wife, Takako Ueda, were looking forward to the New Year's Eve family concert at the Baptist Church, the town fireworks on the pond and then a night at home to celebrate the arrival of 2012.
Frances Herbert and Takako Ueda ("Tah-kah-ko You-AY-dah") of Dummerston received letters this month from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services saying though they're married under Vermont law, federal law doesn't recognize that, and Ueda has overstayed her visa.
