Abstract:

The invention is a handgun in which the spring-loaded slide is replaced by an electric motor, engageable only upon an authorized user entering an access code. A combination rechargeable battery and keypad engages the butt of the handle where the magazine well is located and includes an electrical plug the fits into the handle, making an electrical connection between the battery and a microprocessor in the handgun. Entering the proper code on the keypad allows the microprocessor to complete the circuit between the battery and a motor that actuates the slide. When the device is not in use, the magazine having been removed, the motor then moves the slide rearward, ejecting any cartridge in the chamber, and maintains the slide in a position where the chamber is always open, thereby making obvious to anyone that the gun is not loaded.

A mediator host is provided for identifying services of networked resources which are available for invocation in a grid computing architecture. A mediator host Application Program Interface (API) is configured to receive a service registry query and related resource query. The API identifies the service registry query and related resource query by signature. A service registry query processing agent is configured receive an identified service registry query from the API, and, to communicate with a corresponding service registry to satisfy the query. A resource query processing agent is configured to receive an identified related resource query from the API, and, to communicate with a corresponding resource registry to satisfy the query. The mediator host returns a service query response which satisfies a predetermined resource metric to identify candidate services for invocation.

Abstract:

Among other things, a method includes, on successive occasions over a period of time, gathering measured data and self-reported data that represent a health state of a particular participant in a health goal system, using the gathered data in a machine learning engine to select, for a current occasion, a current intervention to be self-applied by the particular participant, the machine learning engine having learned from data gathered from a group of participants on successive occasions, the effectiveness of sequences of self-applied interventions in improving the health states of participants who belong to respective groups that share similar characteristics, the current intervention being expected to affect, for the particular participant (i) a behavior, (ii) the health state, or (iii) a health awareness, and providing the particular participant, electronically through a user interface, information that will encourage the particular participant to engage in the selected self-applied current intervention.

A read back bit sequence and charge constraint information are obtained. A lower bound on a number of bit errors associated with the read back bit sequence is determined based at least in part on the read back bit sequence and the charge constraint information. The lower bound and an error correction capability threshold associated with an error correction decoder are compared. In the event the lower bound is greater than or equal to the error correction capability threshold, an error correction decoding failure is predicted and in response to the prediction a component is configured to save power.

Abstract:

An aircraft surveillance and recording system adapted to monitor conditions prevailing in the course of a flight and provided for this purpose with video cameras placed at different sites on the plane. The output signals yielded by the video cameras are fed to an on-board radio-frequency transmitter to modulate a radio-frequency carrier that is radiated from the plane and intercepted by an active communication satellite. The satellite relays the signals to a ground recording station whose stored recording of the real time images from the cameras is available to investigators should an accident or other incident occur in the course of the flight. The system includes at least four video cameras, the first of which has an audio function and is trained on the flight crew in the cockpit of the plane. The second video camera is focused on the instrument panel and controls in the cockpit. The third camera which has an audio function looks into the passenger cabin, while the fourth camera is mounted on top of the aircraft rudder to observe exterior surface control movements, such as those of flaps, ailerons and elevators.

Abstract:

An automobile having a pair of front wheels and a pair of rear wheels provided with run-flat tires. The front tired wheels which are steerable are driven through a power transmission by an engine housed between these wheels. The tired front wheels are relatively narrow in width to make room for a large engine and are relatively large in diameter to afford a more favorable power transmission ratio and improved steering control. The tired rear-wheels are broad in width and small in diameter to enhance the tire-to-road surface area for more effective braking and to allow for an enlarged trunk capacity.
