Abstract:
A method of inhibiting the formation and deposition of scale forming moieties in aqueous systems by adding water-soluble or water-dispersible polymers is disclosed. The method comprises adding to an aqueous system a polymer having repeat units characterized by the Formula I: Wherein E is the repeat unit remaining after polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated compound; preferably, a carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid, phosphonic acid, or amide form thereof or mixtures thereof. R is H or lower (C -C )alkyl. G is âCH â or âCHCH â; R is CH âCH âO or CH âCHCH âO where n ranges from about 1 to 100, preferably about 1 to 20. X is an anionic radical selected from the group consisting of SO , PO , or COO; Z is H or hydrogens or any water soluble cationic moiety which counterbalances the valence of the anionic radical X, including but not limited to Na, K, Ca, or NH. F, when present, is a repeat unit having the structure of Formula II: wherein X and Z are the same as in Formula I. R is H or lower (C -C )alkyl.

Abstract:
A process for preparing a water-soluble polymer dispersion is herein provided which is characterized by polymerizing from about 10 to 50 mole percent of a monomer having a formula (II); from about 1 to 50 mole percent of N-alkylacrylamide, N,N-dialkylacrylamide or mixtures thereof; having a formula (III) from about 1 to 70 mole percent acrylamide; and optionally up to about 4 mole percent of a monomer having a formula (I) having a benzyl functionality. The polymerization is carried out in the presence of an aqueous solution of a polyvalent anionic salt which contains (1) a water soluble cationic polymer which is insoluble in the aqueous salt solution and (2) a water soluble cationic polymer which is soluble in the aqueous salt solution.

Abstract:
This invention relates to novel polymeric compositions which are useful for water treatment. These novel compositions are comprised of polymers of. alpha. ,. beta. ethylenically unsaturated monomer(s), preferably containing carboxylic acid or carboxylic amide functionalities, and amine-containing allyl ether monomers.
Water Treatment Polymers And Methods Of Use Thereof
A water soluble polymer composition is disclosed. The polymer has repeat units characterized by the structural formulae: ##STR1## wherein R. sub. 1 is H or lower alkyl (C. sub. 1 -C. sub. 3)b; R. sub. 2 is OH, OM, or NH. sub. 2 ; M is a water soluble cation; R. sub. 3 is a hydroxy substituted alkyl or alkylene radical having from 1 to about 6 carbon atoms or a non-substituted alkyl or alkylene radical having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; X is an anionic radical; Z is H or hydrogens or a water soluble cation or cations which together counterbalance the valence of X, and D is 0 or 1. The copolymer is effective in inhibiting the precipitation of certain scale forming salts, and also acts to inhibit corrosion of metal parts in contact with water systems.
