Abstract:
In a system of communication, a sending node sends a message to a receiving node, which NAKs unsuccessful transmissions. The sending node screens the NAKs to determine if they were sent before the receiver could receive previous transmissions of the same data NAKed. One screening technique is based on an estimated round trip time of a message. Another alternate technique looks a flag in the NAK that synchronizes the sender and the receiver.

Abstract:
A communication system selection algorithm (SSA) implemented by a mobile station chooses between available systems to select a system to serve the mobile station. During initialization, the SSA causes the mobile station to scan the environment and compare available communication systems to determine the best system to provide service. After an initial system is chosen, the SSA causes the mobile station to continuously, or at discrete time intervals, scan the environment for available systems, thus allowing for a seamless switch to an available system whenever a handoff is desired. The SSA chooses the best available system based on measurements of each available system and applying preference rules defined by a service provider and/or user of the mobile station.

Abstract:
A method of manufacturing a polymer composite film for an active layer of a photovoltaic cell according to an embodiment of this invention includes providing a quantity of a solution of a polymer matrix material, mixing a quantity of a guest material with the quantity of the solution of polymer matrix material to form a blend of active material, and controlling a growth rate of the polymer composite film to control an amount of self-organization of polymer chains in the polymer matrix material. A polymer composite film for an active layer of a photovoltaic cell is produced according to this method.

Abstract:
A translucent solar cell has a transparent substrate and a first translucent electrode that is in anode. A transparent active layer, that is a substantially organic material layer, is formed on top of the anode. On top of the active layer, a second translucent electrode is formed. The second translucent electrode is the cathode. In a variation, the first translucent electrode is the cathode and the second translucent electrode the anode. The flexibility in choosing the order of the anode and cathode relative to the transparent substrate allows for an increase in processing techniques and, thus, the amount of utilizable materials to increase the power conversion efficiency of translucent solar cells.

Abstract:
A photovoltaic device has a photovoltaic cell and a photon-conversion component. The photon-conversion component has a photon-conversion material in its composition. The photon-conversion material, while the photovoltaic device is in operation, converts photons in a spectral region including a first wavelength to photons in a spectral region including a second wavelength, the second wavelength being longer then the first wavelength. The photons having the second wavelength are at least one of less damaging to the photovoltaic cell than photons having the first wavelength or converted more efficiently to an electrical current than photons having the first wavelength.

Abstract:
An electro-optic device has a first electrode, a second electrode spaced apart from the first electrode, an active layer disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode, and an interfacial layer in contact with the active layer. The interfacial layer is a blend of a metal oxide and a second material that at least one of reduces a work function or increases an electrical conductivity of the interfacial layer according to an embodiment of this invention. A composition for electro-optic devices is a blend of at least one metal oxide and at least one salt in a ratio, by volume, of at least 1:0.1 and less than 1:1.2.

Abstract:
A polymer solar cell has an anode, cathode and an active layer. The anode has a surface area larger than the cathode. On the anode, in the area with no cathode, is a conducting element in electrical contact with the anode, having a higher conductivity than the anode and substantially surrounding the cathode in order to minimize the distance between any two points on the cathode and the conducting element. The conducting element allows electrons to travel a shorter distance in the anode and through a higher conducting path to an electrical contact.
