  • Xenon Metal Halide Lamp Having Improved Thermal Gradient Characteristics For Longer Lamp Life

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6400076, Jun 4, 2002
  • Filed:
    May 14, 1996
  • Appl. No.:
    08/649887
  • Inventors:
Gary R. Allen - Chesterland OH
Rocco T. Giordano - Garfield Heights OH
Gary O. Jacobs - Willoughby OH
Kenneth S. King - Chesterland OH
Timothy P. Dever - Fairview Park OH
  • Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
  • International Classification:
    H01J 1704
  • US Classification:
    313572, 313620, 313634
  • Abstract:
A high brightness discharge light source having improved thermal balance characteristics includes a lamp envelope having an arc chamber formed therein and a pair of electrodes extending into opposite ends of the arc chamber so as to be displaced from one another by a distance of no greater than 4 mm. A fill disposed within the arc chamber is excited to a discharge state upon the introduction of an excitation energy coupled through the pair of electrodes. The light source is operated vertically so that one of the electrodes is disposed at the top region and the other electrode is disposed at the bottom region of the arc chamber. The arc chamber is formed having a diameter dimension which is just larger than the spacing between the electrodes, and a height dimension which is approximately twice the diameter dimension. The diameter dimension is substantially uniform along the length of the arc chamber. The uniform diameter characteristic is effective so that the thermal operating properties associated with the discharge state are substantially equally distributed from the top to the bottom regions of the arc chamber thereby resulting in extending the life of this light source to approximately 6000 hours.
  • Thermally Insulating Lead Wire For Ceramic Metal Halide Electrodes

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6621219, Sep 16, 2003
  • Filed:
    Dec 28, 2000
  • Appl. No.:
    09/751295
  • Inventors:
Gary R. Allen - Chesterland OH
James Howard - Shaker Heights OH
James A. Leonard - Shaker Heights OH
  • Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
  • International Classification:
    H01J 1718
  • US Classification:
    313623, 313624
  • Abstract:
A significant reduction in thermal energy loss along the legs or ends of the arctubes in a CMH lamp is achieved in the present invention. The diameter of a mandrel ( ) is significantly reduced for CMH lamps. Either a single overwind ( ) or multiple overwind layers ( ) are used. Since the thermal conductivity of the mandrel greatly exceeds that of the overwind, the axial thermal conductivity will scale like the cross sectional area of the mandrel alone.
  • Optimized Ultraviolet Reflecting Multi-Layer Coating For Energy Efficient Lamps

    Dec 10, 2003
  • Appl. No.:
    10/732885
  • Inventors:
Ashfaqul I. Chowdhury - Mayfield Heights OH, US
Rajasingh Israel - Westlake OH, US
Gary R. Allen - Chesterland OH, US
  • Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
  • International Classification:
    H01J 61/35
    H01J 5/16
  • US Classification:
    313112, 313110, 313113, 313489, 313635, 362 61, 362150, 356121
  • Abstract:
A metal halide lamp () includes a light-transmissive envelope () which encloses a metal halide pool () for generating a discharge when spaced apart electrodes () within the envelope are supplied with an electric current. A multi-layer coating () is deposited on a surface () of the envelope. The coating includes several layers of at least two materials of different refractive index, which, in combination, reflect radiation in the UV region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Rather than optimizing the coating for a normal (i. e. , 0) angle of incidence on the coating, the multi-layer coating is optimized at an angle which is selected to be within 10 of the mean angle (α) of incidence of the UV radiation on the arctube surface, thereby increasing the amount of UV radiation which is returned to the metal halide pool. The coating is preferably optimized for high reflectivity in the UV-region of the spectrum and high transmission in the visible region of the spectrum to maximize useful light output while reflecting UV light back to the metal halide pool for improved heating of the pool.
  • High Pressure Lamp With Lamp Flicker Suppression And Lamp Voltage Control

  • Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
  • International Classification:
    H05B 41/36
  • US Classification:
    315209R, 315291, 315224, 315DIG 7
  • Abstract:
A method and system to supply current to a high pressure lamp is provided, the method and system comprising an alternating lamp current waveform with a half cycle mean amplitude I and a half cycle time duration T, a current pulse waveform including at least one current pulse with a half cycle mean amplitude I and at least one current pulse occurring after the trailing edge of a half cycle of the alternating lamp current, the pulse having a half cycle duration of Tp. These waveforms are combined to generate a current waveform including a current pulse waveform, the current pulse waveform starting after a time delay Td from the trailing edge of a half cycle of the alternating lamp current waveform, the time duration Tp of the at least one current pulse lasting less than the remaining time before the leading edge of the second half cycle of the alternating lamp current waveform. The combined current waveform supplies current to a high pressure lamp and produces a cone shaped tip protrusion which reduces lamp flicker.
