Abstract:

A centrifuge instrument and a rotor therefor which is loaded with sample containers automatically by gravity through an opening in a cover located over a core and, subsequent to centrifugation, is unloaded automatically, again assisted by gravity, through an opening in a floor disposed beneath the core. A sample container loading arrangement is provided to hold a plurality of sample containers and to individually present sample containers to the rotor.

Disclosed herein is a fluid handling assembly comprising a multi-valve assembly, a probe connected to a first valve structure in said multi-valve assembly, a plurality of secondary fluid sources connected to secondary valve in said multi-valve assembly and a pump connected to said multi-valve assembly. Each of the valves in the multi-valve assembly comprise valve seats, flexible diaphragms coacting with the valve seat to form leak-tight chambers containing orifices connecting the various channels in the valves, and a means to move the diaphragm to close off the connection between the orifices and thereby shut the valve.

Abstract:

A liquid dispensing apparatus is characterized by a cleaning arrangement movable with the aspirating needle of the apparatus. The cleaning arrangement includes a pair of mating wellheads one of which has a flange with a planar surface thereon. The other of the wellheads has a corresponding cutout therein. When registered, the wellheads cooperate to define a well-like chamber with a closed bottom. The wellheads are each mounted on an arm which is movable from open to closed dispositions in response to movement of the aspirating needle.

Abstract:

An analysis instrument is characterized by a rotatable mold ring onto which is drawn superimposed sheets of plastic material. The inner sheet is softened and formed into an indented mold cavity and the outer sheet sealed thereover to define a partially closed sample chamber, or cuvette. A sample to be analyzed is introduced into the chamber. Any of the chambers may have selectively introduced thereinto a suitable reagent and the reaction occurring in any chamber may be selectively monitored at any predetermined circumferential location of the mold ring.

Abstract:

A centrifuge and method of operation as a fixed angle or swinging angle centrifuge. A pair of cams cooperate with the centrifuge drive shaft to engage and maintain the buckets at a fixed angle. Tubes are automatically unloaded by moving a bracket away from the lower end of a bucket so that the tube drops from the bucket. When the cams are disengaged from the buckets, the buckets are allowed to swing freely.

A method to dampen vibrations of a centrifuge by restraining vertical movement of a disk rotatably attached to the centrifuge's drive shaft. Abstract:

Samples of body fluids such as blood, urine, etc. are passed for analysis through separating columns to extract the desired component from the raw sample. Unwanted ingredients of the sample flow through the resin bed to a refuse cup. The retained desired component is later released from the resin bed by a solvent and collected in a recovery cup. Fluids passing through the resin bed are selectively passed to the refuse cup or recovery cup by flexing a disklike support for the resin bed. Preferably the support is flexed by applying a differential gas pressure across the support. An apparatus for implementing this method includes in a flexible disk, adapted to hold separating columns, suspended across an opening of a vacuum chamber. The outside edges of the disk form a seal for the chamber. The separating columns are in vertical alignment with waste receptacles disposed in a second disk positioned below the first disk.
