Abstract:
For implanting a therapeutic element, this needle assembly includes a cannula having a sharpened distal end, a line of elements in the cannula extending rearward from the distal end. A yieldable positioner including an absorbable plug positions the element more proximate the distal end a predetermined distance from the distal end. The positioner may be in various forms including an end plug, a tab in the cannula. The needle assembly may also be pre-loaded with the line of elements and be sterile and a distortion of the wall of the cannula. A stylet is reciprocable in the cannula and engages the end of the line of elements more remote from the distal end of the cannula.

This bone marrow extraction tool comprises an outer cannula having an interiorly and exteriorly tapered marrow-receiving distal end, and an inner cannula slidably disposed in the outer cannula and having a distal end formed with diametrically opposed narrow and wide longitudinal slots to define resilient sectors. The wide slot is substantially longer than the narrow slot. The mouth of the inner cannula is adapted when forcibly engaging the interior taper of the outer cannula to diminish in diameter as the sectors are cammed inward and thereby compress marrow disposed in the mouth and squeeze it off from the marrow mass outside the outer cannula.

A system for manufacturing interstitial radiation seed strand implants is provided. The system includes a seed dispenser, a member for handling an elongated half-shell member; and a controller in communication with the seed dispenser. The controller commands the seed dispenser to place the radioactive seed elements at desired locations in a first elongate half-shell member. The first half-shell member is mated with a second half-shell member to form a seed strand implant. The seed strand implant is axially stiff and longitudinally flexible, and constructed from bioabsorbable material.
