Abstract:

The present invention provides means to instantaneously optimize reactive kva for an a. c. power system containing both linear and non-linear reactive loads. The preferred means utilizes a reflux transformer which is tuned for maximum energy transfer between primary and secondary windings. Each secondary winding is connected in series with a variable inductor and a fixed capacitive means, so as to continuously reflect variable reactive kva to the power system via the primary and secondary windings. The reactive kva requirements of the power system can thus be continuously optimized without destructive voltage transients associated with switching graduated units of fixed capacitive compensation or incurring the risk of conducting series resonant currents associated with non-linear loads.

Abstract:

Single and polyphase a. c. induction devices, such as: motors, generators, transformers, welders, ballasts, etc. are so wound as to maximize performance and efficiency. For each phase of such device this invention utilizes a combined pair of windings which are conductively and inductively dependent. An energy supply winding of each combined pair is electrically connected to a corresponding input/output phase, while the remaining, or reflux, winding of each pair is electrically connected in series with a tunable capacitive element and to neutral or electrical ground by means of a linear and non-linear resistive means. The energy and reflux windings of each combined pair are positioned within the device in tight-to-critically coupled transformer relationship with a third inductive input/output component and the capacitive reactance adjusted to reduce to a minimum the net reactive factor of the coupled inductive elements and the net reflected impedance of the input/output circuitry, thus facilitating maximum energy transfer and efficiency.

Abstract:

An electromagnetic induction machine having inductively coupled primary, secondary and tertiary branch windings. The exciting current of the primary branch is transformed or reflected, via the inductive coupling, to an electrically separate secondary or tertiary branch. This reflected current in the isolated branch is sustained by connecting a capacitive load impedance to it. Thus, a floating parallel resonant circuit is formed which supplies the needed reactive component in lieu of the primary branch. Different winding techniques are then incorporated in the separate branches to maximize the available winding space and provide improved operating or performance characteristics.

Abstract:

In an induction motor rotor windings are connected together in a squirrel cage or a wound rotor. DELTA. configuration and stator windings are connected in series across a source. A capacitor is connected in parallel with one of the stator windings and this combination is connected in series with the other stator winding and is sized to form a quasi-double-resonant circuit. Both a single-phase and a polyphase motor can be configured as a quasi-double-resonant circuit with respect to each input power phase. A switching circuit employing compactors allows changing the rotation direction of the motor in a polyphase motor. A further polyphase motor is also described with primary stator windings connected to each power phase input and interleaved secondary stator winding, magnetically coupled to the primary stator windings but not directly connected to the power inputs. The secondary stator windings have capacitors coupled in parallel thereto to form parallel floating resonant circuits.

Abstract:

An induction motor includes a stator having at least one pair of stator windings and a rotor with rotor windings which are magnetically coupled to the stator windings via a circumferential air gap. The rotor windings are connected together in a squirrel cage or a wound rotor configuration. The stator windings are connected in series across the source. A capacitor is connected in parallel with one of the stator windings and this combination is connected in series with the other stator winding and is sized to form a quasi-double-resonant circuit, i. e. , a quasi-parallel resonant circuit with the one winding and a quasi-series resonant circuit with the other winding. The stator windings are then grouped to form definite polar areas in the stator and a balanced rotating magnetic field is produced by all the windings throughout the entire load range when the motor is connected to a power source. Both a single-phase and a polyphase motor can be configured as a quasi-double-resonant circuit with respect to each input power phase. A further polyphase motor is also described with primary stator windings connected to each power phase input and interleaved secondary stator winding magnetically coupled to the primary stator windings but not directly connected to the power inputs.

Abstract:

The present invention offers improvement of performance and efficiency of a compact fluorescent lamp by means of a series tuned LRC ballasting circuit. The resonant voltage rise in the circuit is utilized to increase the cyclic crest voltage necessary for lamp ionization. After ionization occurs, lamp current and power are clamped and regulated by the lower Q factor of the tuned circuit. The LRC circuit provides a square wave of voltage across the lamp with considerable reduction in noise and RF ringing. Since it is a tuned circuit, it operates at approximately unity power factor, at lower temperature, and with a net equivalent impedance that provides for maximum illumination, lamp life and efficiency.
