  • Fluorescent Light With Threaded Connector

    view source
  • US Patent:
    43525393, Oct 5, 1982
  • Filed:
    May 30, 1980
  • Appl. No.:
    6/154790
  • Inventors:
Gary W. Vest - Cleveland OH
  • International Classification:
    F21V 2302
  • US Classification:
    339154L
  • Abstract:
A portable fluorescent light, utilizing a fluorescent tube mounted in an elongated, transparent, plastic housing. Sockets for the fluorescent lamp are mounted to the interior of the housing and electrical circuitry within the housing supplies current to operate the lamp. The circuitry includes a ballast and a starter that are also mounted within the tubular housing at one end. A threaded lamp connector of the type normally found on incandescent light bulbs extends outwardly from one end of the housing and is associated with the electrical circuitry to provide an electrical connector for connecting the light to a conventional alternating current power source. The threaded connector is adapted to be threaded into a standard threaded female socket, such as might be found at the end of an incandescent-trouble-light cord unit.
  • Fluorescent Lighting Ballast With Electronic Assist

    view source
  • US Patent:
    48189170, Apr 4, 1989
  • Filed:
    Jul 7, 1986
  • Appl. No.:
    6/882474
  • Inventors:
Gary W. Vest - Cleveland OH
  • International Classification:
    H05B 3700
  • US Classification:
    315171
  • Abstract:
A ballasting circuit for fluorescent lamps includes a series-connected current limiting ballast element and an electronic assist circuit. The ballast element has a high voltage side connectable to a commercial 110 VAC/60 hertz power source and a low voltage side connected in series with the lamp. The electronic assist circuit has a full wave bridge rectifier input means connected to the low voltage side of the ballast element and a transformer output means connected in series between the ballast element and the lamp. The electronic assist circuit generates a relatively high frequency, high voltage excitation signal prior to lamp conduction to assist in starting the lamp. After lamp conduction begins, the low voltage side of the ballast element drops to the normal operating voltage of the lamp and the excitation signal amplitude correspondingly drops, but is not eliminated, so as to maintain lamp operation with low frequency power supplied from the commercial power source.
  • Storage Battery Analyzer

    view source
  • US Patent:
    39567206, May 11, 1976
  • Filed:
    Oct 4, 1974
  • Appl. No.:
    5/512208
  • Inventors:
Gary W. Vest - Cleveland OH
  • International Classification:
    G01N 2730
    G01N 2746
  • US Classification:
    324 295
  • Abstract:
An instrument for measuring and testing wet cell storage battery charge levels including the total charge level and the charge level of individual cells. The instrument has an autopolarity feature and utilizes a diode rectifier circuit with a DC voltmeter connected across the terminals. Separate circuits may be selected to provide two voltage readout scales including a scale for measuring the total charge level and a scale for measuring the charge of individual cells. The device has unique conductive probes at the ends of the test leads, the probes being adapted for immersion in the electrolyte of the cells in order to measure the charge level of individual cells. The probes are also used to provide electrical contact across the battery terminals for the total charge test. The probes are elongated steel rods coated with cadmium plating and having the outer ends ground off so that a roughened steel end surface is exposed to the electrolyte.
  • Fluorescent Lamp And Method Of Manufacturing Same

    view source
  • US Patent:
    57659419, Jun 16, 1998
  • Filed:
    Feb 12, 1996
  • Appl. No.:
    8/600205
  • Inventors:
Gary W. Vest - Cleveland OH
  • Assignee:
Central Tools, Inc. - Cranston RI
  • International Classification:
    F21V 1504
  • US Classification:
    362260
  • Abstract:
A portable work light having a fluorescent lamp (fluorescent light bulb). The fluorescent lamp has a base which supports a translucent envelope that contains a gas for emitting light when energized by an electric input. Activation circuitry is contained within a base housing, as is a portion of the translucent envelope. A flexible, electrically and mechanically insulating material is injected into the base housing to stabilize and prevent movement of the actuation circuitry with respect to the base housing and translucent envelope, thereby preventing damage to the components of the fluorescent lamp. The portable work light has a transparent cover which supports a lamp. The cover has electrical connectors at one end for engaging the lamp. The cover has a bulb support mechanism which engages a lip on the base of a lamp to maintain the electrical contact of the lamp engaged with the electrical connectors and to inhibit movement of the base of the lamp relative to the cover. The portable work light has and end support which engages a lamp at a location away from the base, to resist movement of the end portion of the lamp relative to the cover.

  • US Patent:
    40927067, May 30, 1978
  • Filed:
    Jan 14, 1977
  • Appl. No.:
    5/759423
  • Inventors:
Gary W. Vest - Cleveland OH
  • International Classification:
    F21V 1504
    H01R 3312
  • US Classification:
    362390
  • Abstract:
A portable fluorescent light utilizing a fluorescent tube mounted in an elongated transparent tubular plastic housing with protective end caps. A power cord with associated ballast is used to connect the unit to a power source. Sockets for the fluorescent lamp are mounted on special socket supports inserted in each end of the housing. The socket supports are each in the form of an elongated metal strip bent into a four-legged generally rectangular shape. Two parallel side legs are connected by screws to the tubular housing and the inner leg, which is connected to only one of the side legs, carries its respective socket and is adapted to flex about one end between a relaxed inwardly extending position and a flexed operating position generally perpendicular to the side legs in order to apply an advantageous endwise holding force to tightly retain the fluorescent lamp between the two sockets and also to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction of the tubular plastic housing to which the socket supports are mounted caused by heat from the lamp and environmental temperature variations.
  • Portable Fluorescent Light Unit

    view source
  • US Patent:
    46444530, Feb 17, 1987
  • Filed:
    Jan 14, 1980
  • Appl. No.:
    6/111786
  • Inventors:
Gary W. Vest - Cleveland OH
  • International Classification:
    F21V 2132
  • US Classification:
    362223
  • Abstract:
An improved portable fluorescent light unit is disclosed in which the improvement comprises a pair of electrically insulated lamp supports which facilitate assembly of the unit. Each lamp support may comprise an inner socket element and an outer supporting element. The inner socket elements fit against the ends of the lamp, and each socket element has a pair of apertures in which electrical connectors are mounted. The outer supporting element is attached to the housing of the unit and has a central opening into which the inner socket element is inserted. The lamp supports may also include means for accommodating thermal expansion of the housing by having the inner socket element being slidably mounted with the opening and movable in a direction parallel to the axis of the fluorescent lamp. The electrical connectors may have cylindrical portions adapted to fit circumferentially around the pins extending from the fluorescent lamp and to extend axially a substantial distance along the length of the pin to avoid the problems of point contact mounting arrangements.
