Abstract:

This description addresses ionic compositions of matter comprising positively charged cations [Ct] and negatively charged anions [A] , said anion comprising a central core Group 13 element to which are bound fluoroaryl ligands, at least one of said fluoroaryl ligands being substituted with a siloxy group represented by the symbolsâSiOR , wherein R is a C -C hydrocarbyl or hydrocarbylsilyl substituent. [Ct] may be selected from any capable of use with olefin polymerization catalysts and typically will be from the group consisting of anilinium and ammonium cations, trityl carbenium cations, Group 11 metal cations, silylium cations, the cations of the hydrated salts of Group 1 or 2 metals, and derivatives of the foregoing anilinium, ammonium, trityl carbenium, and silylium cations containing C -C hydrocarbyl, hydrocarbylsilyl, or hydrocarbylamine substituents for one or more hydrogen atoms of said cations. The ionic compositions described can be used to activate olefin polymerization catalysts, and can be prepared so as to be soluble in aliphatic solvents. Syntheses and polymerization are illustrated.

Abstract:

This description addresses fluorinated amine compounds meeting the general formula Râ ArFâER , where ArF is a fluoroaryl group, E is nitrogen or phosphorous, each R is independently a C -C hydrocarbyl group; or the two Rs may connect to form an unsubstituted or substituted C -C cycloaliphatic group, Râ is a C -C hydrocarbyl or halogenated hydrocarbyl, and i is 0, 1 or 2. These compounds may be protonated with strong Bronsted acids to form protonated amine compounds that are useful for the preparation of organometallic catalyst-cocatalyst compounds comprising noncoordinating or weakly coordinating anions. The resulting organometallic catalyst-cocatalyst complexes can be effectively used as olefin polymerization catalysts. High number-average molecular weight polymers at high rates of productivity were observed from the use of metallocene catalyst complexes prepared with [N-pentafluorophenyl pyrrolidinium][tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate] of [N-pentafluorophenyl pyrrolidinium][chloride].

These compounds may be protonated and complexed with suitable substantially noncoordinating anions to prepare polymerization catalyst components. When these catalyst components are combined with organometallic catalyst precursors, the catalyst precursor is activated to a catalyst. This catalyst is combined with monomer under olefin polymerization conditions to prepare polymer. High number-average molecular weight polymers at high productivity rates were observed from using metallocene catalysts activated with [N-pentafluorophenyl pyrrolidinium][tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate].

An activator for olefin polymerization catalysts is disclosed. One aspect of the activator is that it comprises a group-13 central atom connected to at least one fluorinated aryl ring that is itself substituted with a silyl acetylenic group. Disclosed are methods of producing di-, tri- or tetrabenzyl-metal compounds comprising combining a metal salt with a (benzyl)MgXcompound at from less than 30 C. , wherein n is 1 or 2 and X is a monoanionic group; wherein the combining takes place in a diluent mixture comprising from 0 to 80% by volume of an ether diluent and a diluent selected from the group consisting of aromatic diluents, halogenated hydrocarbon diluents, and mixtures thereof. The methods are characterized by employing various mixtures of diluents, and in some cases, minimal to no ether diluent.
