Abstract:
This invention is a method for sculpturing a laser beam ( ) in a predetermined pattern using a device ( ) between the laser source ( ) and the target ( ). The method comprises a series of sequential steps in which at least two regions of the cornea ( ) are each exposed to increasingly larger portions of the laser beam ( ). In the preferred embodiment, two pairs of complementary regions of the cornea ( ) will be sequentially exposed to laser radiation. In each such region, a first part will be exposed to a substantially segmental portion of the beam ( ), and then at least another larger substantially segmental portion of the beam ( ) in which the larger segmental portion, includes the smaller segmental portion. In the preferred embodiment, the target ( ) is the human eye, and the predetermined pattern is intended to shape the eye to treat it for astigmatism, myopia, or hyperopia.
The present application discloses a phakic intraocular lens (IOL) for the correction of visual disorders such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia. The lens is made from a biocompatible, elastomeric material such as silicone. The lens further includes one or more annular surfaces that protrude from the anterior surface of the lens or surrounds the lens such that when placed in the eye, it makes contact with the iris. As the iris dilates and constricts, the contact with the iris places a centering force on the implanted lens. The lens is not in contact with the natural lens of the eye and floats in the posterior chamber without insult or abrasion to surrounding tissue.

Abstract:
A burette () suitable for delivery of a reagent into a target solution () employs diffusion for delivering the reagent. The reagent is in the form of a solution, which is combined with a matrix material (), such as a gel or porous ceramic. A membrane () covers a delivery outlet () to the burette. In one embodiment, the delivery outlet comprises a plurality of fine bores (), each one filled with or covered by a membrane (). Stirring of the burette or target solution is achieved with a stirring means (). A heating or cooling means () heats a tip () of the burette.
A sensor probe suited for implanting into the skin of a person includes a sensor body which may be formed from a polymer which includes 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). A sensing system is supported by the body. The sensing system exhibits a detectable change when the probe is exposed to the analyte in the fluid. The sensing system may include an enzyme capable of catalyzing a reaction of the analyte to form a reaction product and a dye system which absorbs in the infrared region of the spectrum in response to the reaction product.

Abstract:
A system for correcting presbyopia provides a laser adapted to sculpt the cornea in two concentric zones. The first larger zone is treated with a positive diopter correction to allow eye to focus on near objects. A second smaller zone is then treated with a negative diopter correction to allow the cornea to focus on far objects. In one embodiment, the system directs the laser in a series of collapsing crescents to sculpt the zones.

Abstract:
A method for selecting the size of a phakic intraocular lens positioned in the eye between the iris and the natural lens, is disclosed. In this method, the white to white distance of the patient's eye is measured and the length of the lens is based on that measurement. A photographic method of measurement is disclosed.

Philosophy:
My goal is to improve the quality of life of my patients. I do that as an Ophthalmologist using LASIK eye surgery and I do it by applying the latest in genetics, hormones and medical science to help my patients prevent and treat eye disease. My goal is to prevent and slow the progression of cataract and macular degeneration. What is fascinating is that this same preventative therapy helps with many other medical condition as well because it is rooted in genetics and biochemistry.
