A faucet includes a valve cartridge having a housing with an inlet and outlet thereto. A valve plate is movable in the housing with respect to a fixed valve seat to control the quantity of fluid delivered from the inlet to the outlet. A bearing plate is positioned against the valve plate, a handle being provided on a handle bearing support to control the valve plate. A gasket between the valve seat and the housing is preloaded to provide a fluid-tight seal between the valve plate and the valve seat and a predetermined amount of friction therebetween. In manufacturing such a valve cartridge wherein the housing and the handle bearing support are formed of plastic, the parts are assembled and an ultrasonic welding mechanism is operated fixedly to secure the handle bearing support to the housing. It is preferable that the valve cartridge have a cylindrical housing in which the valve means are located and a base which carries the housing having its periphery confined within the periphery of the housing, and being recessed to define flange means for accepting fasteners used in mounting the valve cartridge. Where the valve cartridge is to be used to control the quantity and ratio of two liquids, two inlets to the housing would be provided.

Abstract:
A spread center faucet for mounting on a sink between spaced hot and cold water valves, the faucet having a continuous, curved spout tube having an inlet fitting at the end of a lower portion and a discharge head at its upper end, a hollow housing having a base member with a flat base section for mounting on the sink and an arched section leading to a discharge tip, and a cover removably secured to said base member by fasteners and defining with said base member an enclosed, elongated curved housing cavity extending from said flat base section to said discharge tip, and locking means within said housing cavity for securing and for orienting said spout tube in said cavity with said discharge head located at said discharge tip and said lower portion projecting from said flat base section of said base member for connection of said inlet fitting beneath said sink to said supply conduits, said locking means including means for clamping said spout tube to said base member.

Abstract:
A diaphragm valve for faucet valve assemblies is disclosed. The diaphragm has a thick valve closure portion received in an end recess in a valve plunger, the plunger being nonrotatable and reciprocably mounted in the valve body for movement relative to a valve seat against which the valve closure portion of the diaphragm is held in valve closed position. The valve diaphragm has a thin supporting section extending radially from the valve closure portion which rolls during the stroke of the valve plunger and the end of the valve plunger and the sidewall of the outlet chamber in the valve body provides a continuous surface against which the supporting section of the diaphragm is pressed without being stretched by the pressure of water in the outlet chamber in the valve open position of the diaphragm. In the valve closed position of the diaphragm, the inlet water pressure acts against the diaphragm to enhance the seal at the valve seat.

Abstract:
A process for making steel wear plates for use as railroad car truck side frame/bolster damping components utilizes the sequential steps of heating, pressing, quenching and then tempering. The heating process includes bringing the wear plate to a temperature of approximately 1750. degree. F. so that the plate is essentially 100 percent austenite. Generally uniform pressure is applied to the plate while heated to bring the plate to a desired flatness. Quenching fluid is thereafter applied to the flattened plate, while maintaining pressure thereon, to bring the plate to a predetermined brinnell hardness, a predetermined temperature, and a metallurgical characteristic of at least 90 percent martensite. The plate is thereafter tempered at a temperature of from 910. degree. -940. degree. F. for a period of time sufficient to bring the plate to a brinnell hardness less than the hardness after quenching.

Abstract:
A supply conduit mounting assembly is disclosed for a single lever faucet. In assembled condition, the hot and cold water supply conduits are connected to the valve body of the faucet and rigidly held from movement relative to the valve body by a plate which serves as a structural member for mounting the valve body and connecting the end sections of the supply conduits to the valve body without threaded fittings or brazing. Resilient O-rings associated with the ends of the supply conduits provide a water-tight seal adjacent the junction of the supply conduits and the valve body bores and thereby prevent water from coming into contact with the mounting plate, which may be a low cost die casting of metal which is not required to be corrosion resistant.

Abstract:
A cartridge type regulator and shut-off valve assembly for a water cooler includes a hollow cylindrical body received in a mating bore in a casting which is part of the cooler. The cartridge includes a hollow cylindrical body which, at its inner end, is formed with an inlet passage and an outlet passage connected to each other by a valve-controlled opening in the inlet passage. This opening faces axially inwardly of the body while the valve faces outwardly and is carried by an axially movable stem. A manual actuator is depressed to slide the valve stem inwardly and move the valve away from the opening and the valve is returned by a spring to the closing position when the actuator is released. The valve-controlled opening, as well as a part of the inlet passage, is formed in a bar which extends diametrically across the inside of the body and is an integral part of the latter so that the opening does not shift or creep even if the parts are made of molded plastic. Assembly of the valve stem is facilitated by forming it in parts with the inner part being U-shaped.
