Former Indiana superintendent is Florida's new education commissioner
The Florida Board of Education on Wednesday unanimously selected Bennett as the state's new education commissioner, winding up a four-month search. The state needed a new commissioner after Gerard Robinson abruptly resigned a year into his tenure.
On Monday, commissioner Gerard Robinson proposed reducing the FCAT writing passing score, on which school grades are based, from 4.0 to 3.5. A year ago, the state could not issue 3.5 scores because it eliminated second readers for each exam.
When Florida won its race to the top grant, Gov. Charlie Crist was in office and Eric Smith was education commissioner. Crist was replaced by Gov. Rick Scott and Smith was replaced first by an interim commissioner and then, last summer, by Gerard Robinson.
