Abstract:

This disclosure relates to methods and devices to count particles of interest, such as cells. The methods include obtaining a fluid sample that may contain particles of interest; counting all types of particles in a portion of the sample using a first electrical differential counter to generate a first total; removing any particles of interest from the portion of the fluid sample; counting any particles remaining in the portion of the fluid sample using a second electrical differential counter after the particles of interest are removed to generate a second total; and calculating a number of particles of interest originally in the fluid sample by subtracting the second total from the first total, wherein the difference is the number of particles of interest in the sample. These methods and related devices can be used, for example, to produce a robust, inexpensive diagnostic kit for CD4+ T cell counting in whole blood samples.

Abstract:

Perfluoroalkylether (PFAE) tertiary mono- and poly-alcohols of the general structure: ##STR1## wherein R. sup. 1 and R. sup. 3 represent perfluoroalkyl groups having from one to fifty carbon atoms or PFAE groups having 2-50 carbon atoms and 1-49 oxygen atoms; R. sup. 2 represents a PFPAE group having 3-50 carbon atoms and 1-48 oxygen atoms; A represents perfluoroalkylene groups containing 2-30 carbon atoms or perfluoroalkyleneether groups having 2-30 carbon atoms and 1-29 oxygen atoms; and n is an integer having a value ranging from zero to ten; and wherein the alcohol contains at least 12 carbon atoms per molecule. The perfluoroalkylether (PFAE) tertiary mono- and poly-alcohols are mixed with perfluoropolyalkylether fluids in an amount ranging from 0. 01 to 1. 00 weight percent to provide fluids having improved antiwear properties.

Abstract:

An oxidation-corrosion additive for enhancing the stability of PFPAEs which has the formula: ##STR1## wherein Q is --R. sub. f or --S--R. sub. f, R. sub. f is a perfluoroalkyl or perfluoroalkylether group having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, x and y are integers, each having a value of 0-5, wherein the sum of x and y is in the range of 1 to 10. In the formula above, R. sub. f may be linear or branched. The additive can be a single component or a mixture of components varying in the number and relative positions of x and y. The additive can be used alone or with other suitable additives in PFPAE base fluids.

Two new classes of polysilahydrocarbons: R. sub. n --Si--[CH. sub. 2 CH. sub. 2 --Si--R. sup. 1. sub. 3 ]. sub. (4-n) (III) C. sub. 6 H. sub. (12-m) [CH. sub. 2 CH. sub. 2 SiR. sup. 1. sub. 3 ]. sub. m (IV) where R and R. sub. 1 are alkyl groups having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, "n" is an integer between 0 and 3, and "m" is an integer between 2 and 6. Lubricant compositions containing the new polysilahydrocarbons are disclosed. Methods of making the new polysilahydrocarbons are also disclosed.
