Abstract:
A message retrieval system is disclosed which includes a plurality of answering machines, each connected to respected telephone line. Each answering machine records telephone responses on a respective message memory unit and all message memory units are connected to a single message processor. The message processor is in turn connected to a number of retrieval consoles used by operators to transcribe messages from the message memory units. The message processor operates (1) to automatically switch the mode of a headset included in the retrieval console between a transcription mode and a dialog mode to allow an operator either to transcribe messages or to conduct live telephone conversations via the same headset; (2) to allow a console to place a commanded message memory unit on hold while live telephone conversations are being conducted; (3) to disconnect a commanded message memory unit from a console in the event the console fails to command the message memory unit within a predetemined time; (4) to take positive action in the event recorded messages on one of the message memory units age excessively prior to transcription; and (5) to prevent a single operator closure of a switch or footpedal on the retrieval console from causing more than a preselected amount of transcription or rewinding of the message memory unit.
Controlled Recovery Automatic Gain Control Amplifier
An automatic gain control amplifier having a controlled recovery of gain is disclosed and includes a peak detector for generating an output when the amplifier output exceeds a predetermined level, a memory setting circuit responsive to the peak detector output, a memory controlled by the memory setting circuit, and a memory adjust circuit responsive to information derived from the amplifier output. The output of the memory controls an attenuator of the automatic gain control amplifier. Amplifier output level change detection circuitry is also disclosed and accepts the output of the amplifier for producing an output indicating amplifier output level changes exceeding a predetermined magnitude. The level change detection output controls the memory adjust circuit.

Abstract:
A message delivery system is described which includes a plurality of announce units, each of which includes means for storing a respective message segment. A controller activates selected ones of the announce units in sequence in order to broadcast a message made up of a plurality of message segments to a number of line interface units. Each of the line interface units is connected to a respective telephone line and acts to transmit the message to the associated telephone line. The controller activates selected ones of the announce units which store selected message segments in a predetermined sequence such that a total message made up of a number of separate segments is broadcast to the line interface units. Each message segment is recorded with an end of segment signal which is detected by the announce unit at the end of the respective segment. Each announce unit generates an end of segment signal which is used by the controller in order automatically to sequence the announce units in the proper order.

Abstract:
A line activity monitor for a plurality of telephone lines operates to record a log for each call indicative of the time at which the telephone line entered each of a plurality of states during the call. In this way, complete information regarding line usage is recorded for each call, and the use of averages or summary statistics is avoided. Detailed analysis can then be applied to the information contained in the logs, tailored to the individual application. The disclosed line activity monitor also acts to record a coded signal with each log. This coded signal is generated by an operator following the answering of an incoming call, and can be used to indicate the purpose of the call to further enhance the line usage statistics developed from the information in the logs. The disclosed line activity monitor also distinguishes between the presence and absence of voice during the time the line is in an off-hook condition in order to enable the effective tabulation of nonproductive periods, whether or not the A and A1 control leads are used to place the line on hold.
