Abstract:

A method for assembling components that are sealed hydraulically or pneumatically includes forming an outer component having an inner surface, a groove for holding a seal, the groove having an opening at the inner surface. A seal is fabricated in the form of a substantially circular ring having a scarf cut extending through the width and the thickness of the seal, and a second inner surface having an inside diameter. The seal is then placing over a mandrel having a diameter that is larger than the inside diameter of the second inner surface so that the seal is expanded by plastic deformation such that a gap is formed at the scarf cut. Then the seal is inserted in the groove while the seal is expanded.

Abstract:

A dual mode one-way torque transmitting device includes an inner race having a first plurality of notches spaced about an axis. An intermediate race includes a second plurality of notches spaced about the axis, a first plurality of pockets spaced about the axis, and a first plurality of rockers, each rocker being located in a pocket of the intermediate race. A spring urges each rocker toward engagement with a notch on the inner race. An outer race includes a second plurality of pockets spaced about the axis, a second plurality of rockers, each rocker being located in a pocket on the outer race, and a plurality of actuators, each actuator alternately engages and disengages a rocker on the outer race and a notch on the intermediate race.

An automatic transmission includes a first planetary gearset having a first planet pinion set rotatably supported on a common carrier and drivingly engaged with a first sun gear and a first composite gear that acts both as a first ring gear and a second sun gear. A second planetary gearset includes a second planetary pinion set rotatably supported on the common carrier and drivingly engaged with a third sun gear, the first composite gear and a second composite gear that acts both as a second ring gear and a third ring gear. A third planetary gearset has a third planet pinion set rotatably supported on the common carrier and drivingly engaged with a third sun gear and the second composite gear. Abstract:

A system and method of controlling a hybrid electric vehicle powertrain is provided. The hybrid-electric powertrain includes an engine, a battery, an electric motor, an electric generator and a transmission with a planetary gear unit. The planetary gear unit mechanically couples the engine, the electric motor and the electric generator to effect power delivery to vehicle traction wheels. Stored electrical power is delivering to the electric motor to drive the traction wheels in an electric-only operation mode. A first amount of torque is applied to the planetary gear unit with the electric generator in order to reduce the amount of wear to the planetary gear unit in the electric-only operation mode.

Methods and system are provided for locking a half shaft to a wheel hub to engage four wheel drive are disclosed. In one example, a wheel hub is locked to a half shaft via a radially expanding engagement mechanism. The radially expanding engagement mechanism is without grease and without springs.
