Abstract:

Magnetic, conformable articles for use with traffic bearing surfaces are disclosed which comprise an organic binder having magnetic particles distributed therein. The articles may be employed in intelligent vehicle guidance systems, and in systems to guide other mobile objects such as farm animals, pets, or visually impaired pedestrians. Methods of making the articles and methods of using the systems to control and/or guide a mobile object using the magnetic field generated from the articles are also described.

Retroreflective article (10), e. g. , in the form of a pavement marking, having raised, nonintegral protuberances (16) that exhibit good dry retroreflectivity and recover retroreflectivity quickly after exposure to water. Abstract:

A pavement marking that has yellow-tinted, retroreflective beads partially embedded in a bead-carrier medium. The bead-carrier medium contains 0. 5 to 15 volume percent of a light-scattering agent that scatters white light. The pavement marking is able to retroreflect a distinct yellow color at nighttime without using yellow pigments that contain the potentially-toxic metals, cadmium, chromium, and lead.

Abstract:

A pavement marker includes an object, such as a sheet or a raised pavement marker body, having an upper surface useful as a pavement marking indicium and a lower surface, and a bottom layer of polyorganosiloxane pressure-sensitive adhesive in intimate contact with the lower surface. A pressure-sensitive adhesive laminate system for attaching a pavement marker to a roadway surface includes a first layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive material, such as a polyorganosiloxane adhesive, a second layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive material, and a layer of deformable material interposed between the first and second pressure-sensitive adhesive layers, wherein the deformable material of the interposed layer is characterized by high cohesive (shear) strength. A method of marking a pavement having a temperature below 15. degree. C. includes providing a pavement marker of the invention and contacting the pavement with the pressure-sensitive adhesive and applying pressure to the top layer to bond the pavement marking material to the pavement.

Abstract:

The articles of the present invention comprise optical elements embedded in either a core having a binder layer which is embedded in a road-binder or optical elements which are directly embedded into a binder layer. The binder layer may be part of a preformed pavement marking tape or may be applied directly to a traffic-bearing surface. The binder layer is comprised of a black pigment. The pavement marking articles of the present invention comprise one or more first region(s) wherein the first region(s) has a daytime appearance of black and is retroreflective. In another embodiment of the present invention, the pavement marking articles further comprise one or more second region(s) having a color which contrasts with black during the daytime and which is typically also retroreflective. The second region(s) is adjacent to the first region(s).
