Abstract:

Techniques are provided for controlling the recording of intracardiac electrograms (IEGMs) within an implantable medical device such as a pacemaker, wherein the device is capable of recording different channels of IEGMs in response to different diagnostic triggers. Exemplary triggers include pacemaker-mediated tachycardia; atrial tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, etc. In one example, the device stores, for each diagnostic trigger, a physician selection of particular IEGMs to be recorded for subsequent review. Then, whenever a trigger is detected, the device senses and records only the particular IEGMs that had been selected by the physician for that particular trigger. The IEGMs are eventually transmitted to an external programmer for review. In this manner, the physician can specify particular IEGMs to be stored in response to particular diagnostic triggers, thereby providing considerable diagnostic flexibility, while also conserving memory.

Abstract:

Controllable refueling drogues and associated systems and methods are disclosed. A system in accordance with one embodiment includes a fuel delivery device having a deployable portion configured to be deployed overboard an aircraft during aerial refueling. The deployable portion can include at least a portion of a flexible fuel line, a drogue coupled to the flexible fuel line, and an actuatable device operatively coupled to at least one of the drogue and the fuel line. The deployable portion can further include a guidance system that is operatively coupled to the actuatable device and that includes instructions to direct the operation of the actuatable device and move the drogue during flight.

Abstract:

The present embodiment relates to a method for preparing a composite graphite-silicon negative electrode material whereby an essentially dry mixture of graphite carbon powder and an element or elements selected from the new IUPAC Group Number 12-15 of the Periodic Table of Elements that can form alloys or compounds with lithium is prepared to provide an electrochemically active mixture. A mechanical agitation process serves to mix the constituent materials and to produce a fine dispersion with intimate contact between graphite and the Group 12-15 materials. A lithium ion battery negative electrode of this composition takes synergistic advantage of the high lithium capacity of some IUPAC Group materials and the long cycle-life of graphite negative electrode materials.

Abstract:

A zinc/air system such as a fuel cell or mechanically rechargeable zinc/air battery has a zincate-trapping material to extend electrolyte life. Solid calcium hydroxide is used as the zincate-trapping material in some embodiments. The zincate-trapping material may be provided in the form of pellets, powders, or the like in assemblies that permit electrolyte to contact the zincate-trapping material. The assemblies may be replaceable while the system remains in operation. In some embodiments, the assemblies are removable and may be processed after use to collect zinc for recycling.

Electrochemical cells containing nanostructured negative active materials and composite positive active materials and methods of fabricating such electrochemical cells are provided. Positive active materials may have inactive components and active components. Inactive components may be activated and release additional lithium ions, which may offset some irreversible capacity losses in the electrochemical cells. In certain embodiments, the activation releases lithium ion having a columbic content of at least about 400 mAh/g based on the weight of the activated material.

Abstract:

Provided are novel electrolytes for use in rechargeable lithium ion cells containing high capacity active materials, such as silicon, germanium, tin, and/or aluminum. These novel electrolytes include one or more pyrocarbonates and, in certain embodiments, one or more fluorinated carbonates. For example, dimethyl pyrocarbonate (DMPC) may be combine with mono-fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC). Alternatively, DMPC or other pyrocarbonates may be used without any fluorinated carbonates. A weight ratio of pyrocarbonates may be between about 0% and 50%, for example, about 10%. Pyrocarbonates may be combined with other solvents, such as ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), diethyl carbonate (DEC), and/or ethyl-methyl carbonate (EMC). Alternatively, pyrocarbonates may be used without such solvents. Experimental results conducted using electrochemical cells with silicon based electrodes demonstrated substantial improvements in cycle life when pyrocarbonate containing electrolytes were used in comparison with pyrocarbonate free electrolytes.
