Abstract:
A classification mechanism to allow selected classes of multicast entries to be acted upon in a chosen order of priority during multicast distribution tree convergence is provided. Such prioritization allows for the designation of customers, networks or multicast groups to receive faster convergence of multicast distribution trees to modified multicast distribution trees in response to unavailability of an upstream router, and in performing other multicast-related tasks (e. g. , PIM joins and prunes). One aspect of the present invention provides for multicast entries (also called multicast states) that are at a same priority level to be acted upon in a fair manner, thereby avoiding having certain multicast entries and their associated users from being acted upon consistently last.

Abstract:
In one embodiment, a network device joins a first multicast tree to receive post-ad-inserted video content. The network device also joins a second multicast tree to receive the pre-ad-inserted video content. The content from the first multicast tree is forwarded by the network device to the receiver(s). The network device determines if it does not receive the content on the first multicast tree due to any failure, in which case, it delivers the content from the second multicast tree to the receiver(s). This enables the receiver to receive the original (pre-ad-inserted) content during the failure in first multicast tree. When the failure is resolved, the network device can go back to sending the content from the first multicast tree to the receiver(s).

Abstract:
In one embodiment, a local content hub device in a network receives content for distribution to a plurality of nodes in the network. The content is sent to the local content hub via a wide area network (WAN) using bit index explicit replication (BIER) messaging. The local content hub device caches the content and multicasts the cached content to the plurality of nodes in the network. The local content device determines that at least one of the plurality of nodes in the network did not receive the multicast content. The local content device retransmits the content to at least one of the plurality of nodes in the network that did not receive the multicast content.
