Abstract:
An improved vent cap system for use in an electrochemical battery is provided which includes a ring flange for forming a ring seal between the vent cap assembly and the fill tube. When the vent cap assembly is positioned in the battery housing, the ring flange and the fill tube deform to create a seal therebetween to provide a fluid tight seal.

Abstract:
A battery with a pair of handle assemblies that includes a battery casing having a pair of lips extending outwardly from the end walls near the opening in the battery casing. Each lip has a recessed portion with a slot defined by the end wall and a slot side wall. The battery casing also has a pair of protrusions on each of the end walls located below the slot. Each of the handle assemblies has a handle and an attachment structure that includes a substantially flat, rectangular base and a side wall. The back of the side wall has a cavity and a channel extending from an open end at the top edge to a closed end proximate the cavity. The handle includes a strap connected to the side wall on a first end and a loop on the second end. The handles are adapted to pass through the slots on the end walls of the battery casing, the channels are adapted to slidably contact the protrusions on the end walls, the cavities are adapted to detachably engage the protrusions and the bases are adapted to contact the slot side walls.

Abstract:
A battery with a threaded battery terminal for accommodating a threaded terminal bolt is provided. The threaded battery terminal includes a bushing having an axial bore extending between an open end and a closed end; and an insert having a longitudinal axis and a threaded opening extending along the longitudinal axis between an open end and a back wall. The terminal bolt is threadably received in the threaded opening and the back wall of the insert has sufficient strength to cause an overlong bolt to break upon continued threaded insertion subsequent to the bolt contacting the back wall.

Abstract:
A switch for controlling the supply of current from a battery cell in a cell cavity to a battery terminal in a battery casing is disclosed. The switch includes a mounting base, a first buss bar connected to the mounting base and connectable to the battery cell, a second buss bar connected to the mounting base and connectable to the battery terminal, and a relay having open and closed positions. The relay includes a third buss bar that places the first buss bar and the second buss bar in contact to provide current from the battery cell to the battery terminal when the relay is in the closed position. The relay is moved into a latched open position when a first winding of a coil of the relay is energized by electricity, and is moved back into a latched closed position when a second winding of the coil is energized.

Abstract:
A storage battery includes a generally rectangular container having opposed side walls, end walls, a bottom wall and an open top defining a container interior. The container interior is divided into a plurality of cells supporting positive and negative plates. The plates include aligned positive lugs and aligned negative lugs. A pair of conductive straps are provided. One of the straps interconnects the positive lugs while the other strap interconnects the negative lugs. A tombstone extends from each of the straps. Each tombstone is located at a position spaced inwardly from the container walls. A pair of battery terminals are supported within the container end walls. Each battery terminal is directly connected to one of the tombstones. The battery terminals are positioned between the tombstone and the container wall and include a termination location adjacent the container wall for direct disconnectable termination thereat. A cover is provided for enclosing the open end of the container.

Abstract:
A battery is delineated comprising, in combination, a battery cover having a Cast on Strap (COS) post extending into an aperture located in a top surface of the battery cover; and a battery terminal bushing, integrally coupled to the battery cover, having a first portion fitting about and coupled to the COS post, and having a second portion extending away from the first portion approximately orthogonally. The second portion of the battery terminal bushing extends through the battery cover and is accessible via an aperture located on a side surface of the battery cover, thereby providing frontal access to battery termination.
