Abstract:
A power converter comprises an event detection module detecting various events of the power converter in real time at the switching frequency of a switch in the power converter according to predetermined criteria. A pulse generator generates control signals for controlling the on-times and off-times of the switch based on the various detected events. The events detected by the event detection module include a detection of a “knee” in the reflected secondary voltage on the auxiliary windings of the transformer in a primary side sensing flyback power converter, and detection of a digital error quantifying the difference between the reference voltage and the reflected secondary voltage on the auxiliary windings of the transformer in time domain.

Abstract:
An AC-to-DC power converter controller reconstructs the output voltage of the power converter without a sample-and-hold circuit or an opto-coupler. The controller includes an accumulation module for accumulating a difference value obtained by subtracting a first representation of an output voltage of the power converter corresponding to a first sampling timing from the output voltage value sampled at a second sampling timing subsequent to the first sampling timing to obtain a second representation of the output voltage of the power converter corresponding to the second sampling timing. The accumulation module may set the second representation of the output voltage to a predetermined maximum value if the output voltage value sampled at the second sampling timing exceeds the predetermined maximum value, or to a predetermined minimum value if the output voltage value sampled at the second sampling timing is less than the predetermined minimum value.
Digitally Controlled Current Regulator For High Power Solid State Lighting
A representative apparatus embodiment provides for controlling current supplied to solid state lighting, such as light emitting diodes. A representative apparatus comprises a memory adapted to store a plurality of current parameters, and a control circuit adapted to modulate an energizing cycle time period for providing a substantially constant DC average current to the solid state lighting in response to a selected current parameter from the plurality of current parameters. In a representative embodiment, the control circuit modulates a current provided to the solid state lighting in response to a predetermined minimum current level (I) parameter and a predetermined peak current level (I) parameter, such that the DC average current level (I) is substantially proportional to one-half of a sum of a predetermined peak current level (I) and a predetermined minimum current level I.

Representative embodiments provide an apparatus, system, and method for power conversion to provide power to solid state lighting, and which may be coupled to a first switch, such as a dimmer switch. A representative system for power conversion comprises: a switching power supply comprising a second, power switch; solid state lighting coupled to the switching power supply; a voltage sensor; a current sensor; a memory; a first adaptive interface circuit to provide a resistive impedance to the first switch and conduct current from the first switch in a default mode; a second adaptive interface circuit to create a resonant process when the first switch turns on; and a controller to modulate the second adaptive interface circuit when the first switch turns on to provide a current path during the resonant process of the switching power supply.
A system and method for driving one or more LEDs by regulating their brightness by controlling the LEDs' average current or voltage. The system includes a switching power converter and an integrated digital regulator with at least one of electrical, thermal, and optical feedbacks. The regulator is constructed as a PI or PID controller for continuous mode of operation of the power converter. Current is provided through an inductor and a power switch during an on time of the power switch. The ampseconds of the inductor are measured at an off time and compared with a periodic ramp signal. A set reference signal is also compared with the periodic ramp signal. Based on the comparisons between the ramp signal, the measured ampseconds, and the reference signal, a control signal is generated to regulate the peak current through the power switch.

Current is provided to a segment of light emitting diodes in a plurality of segments of light emitting diodes. Embodiments generate a current and sequentially and separately switch the current to each segment of light emitting diodes in the plurality of segments of light emitting diodes for a corresponding period of time, where the corresponding period of time is based on an average current of the generated current.
Load Identifying Ac Power Supply With Control And Methods
An improved AC power supply is described. The supply identifies the load through monitoring the current and voltage wave forms and phase relations with the AC Mains. The comparison is done in conditions where the power to the load is programmably varied through use of a control switch located in the line and neutral between the AC mains and the load. The program of controlling the switch is varied to optimize the ability to distinguish similar load types. The switch can be further used to control power to the load that varies according to a set of rules based upon the identity of the load. In a preferred embodiment, the design enables high efficiency with minimal components that may be fully integrated onto silicon.
A bidirectional switch for the control of power from an AC source to a load is described. The approach uses power MOSFETs in a bidirectional switch subcircuit configuration having an optically coupled, electrically floating control circuit that self-biases the switches into the “on” state and uses an optically coupled control element to force the switches into the “off state. The time constant of the control circuit is fast enough to allow phase control as well as on-off control. A boost circuit is included to ensure that the control voltage exceeds a threshold voltage of the MOSFETs to force an off state. A plurality of subcircuits can be easily cascaded to provide improved performance
