Abstract:

A method and system for copper coated anode active material may include providing a metal current collector; an active material layer on the current collector, the active material layer comprising at least 50% silicon by weight, a pyrolyzed carbon source; and a layer of metal on the active material layer that increases conductivity of the layer. The surface may be opposite to a surface of the active material layer that is coupled to the current collector. The layer of metal may comprise copper. The silicon may comprise particles ranging in size from 2 to 50 μm. The metal layer may comprise islands of metal on the silicon particles. The islands of metal may have a thickness of 100 nm or less. The islands of metal may be less than 50 μm across. A conductivity of the anode active material layer and layer of metal may be less than 2×10Ω-cm.

Abstract:

Methods of forming electrochemical cells are described. In some implementations, the method can include providing an electrochemical cell having an electrode including electrochemically active material with at least about 20% to about 100% by weight of silicon. The method can include charging the electrochemical cell by providing a formation charge current at about 1 C or greater to the electrochemical cell. The method can also include discharging the electrochemical cell. In various implementations, substantially no rest of greater than about 5 minutes occurs between charging and discharging.

Abstract:

Systems and methods provide for safety of silicon dominant anodes in a battery. The battery may include an anode comprising an anode active material layer on a metal current collector, where the anode active material layer comprises pyrolyzed binder, conductive additives, and 50% or more silicon by weight. The battery may further include a separator, an electrolyte, a cathode, and a solid electrolyte interface between the anode active material layer and the electrolyte, and has a thermal runaway temperature of greater than 260 C. The conductive additives may comprise between 1% and 40% of the active material layer. The anode active material layer may comprise between 20% to 95% silicon. The separator may comprise ceramic-coated polyolefin or polymer-coated polyolefin. The electrolyte may comprise Lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF) and/or lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) in one or more electrolyte solvents. The metal current collector may comprise copper.
