Abstract:A method of synthesizing nanoparticles includes: combining at least one stabilizing agent, at least one precursor and an ionic liquid to form a reaction mixture; heating the reaction mixture to a predetermined temperature to form the nanoparticles and cause the nanoparticles to self-separate from the reaction mixture; and collecting the nanoparticles from the reaction mixture. Abstract:A system and method for the visualization and analysis of genome informatics that provides a visualization tool for bioinformatics. Genomic data for many organisms from disparate sources are integrated into a relational database, which continually may be expanded and updated from public sources. Users can visually organize this information, and navigate to points of interest through a graphical interface. Once an object of interest has been located, the relevant data may be extracted in a convenient form specified by the user. The original data remain accessible and can be manipulated or reorganized. Users can import their own data, fully integrate them into the graphical display and add personal annotations to data stored in the database. Biological data integration, data visualization, data annotation, and data storage/management modules provide a unifying interface for bioinformatic data from divergent sources. Specialized components combine genomic data from diverse organisms into one universal format, graph objects in a manageable manner, store data concerning a fragment of genomic data, store relevant data in a relational database, provide user and administrator access and allow users to add custom modules for conducting proprietary analyses through the interface.

Abstract:A magnetorheological material comprises a magnetic particle and a ceramic material, wherein the magnetorheological material is in a dried form and further wherein a portion of the ceramic material is in the form of a nanocrystalline coating over the entire exterior surface of the magnetic particle and another portion of the ceramic material is in the form of a free nanocrystal. A magnetorheological material comprises a magnetic particle having a ceramic material coating over an external surface thereof as a result of a coating process, and a free nanocrystal of the ceramic material in the form of a residual by-product of the coating process. A sol-gel process for making a magnetorheological product comprises providing a sol of a desired ceramic coating material; combining a desired quantity of carbonyl iron (CI) particles with the sol to coat the CI particles with the ceramic coating material; creating a resulting quantity of nanocrystalline ceramic material-coated CI particles and a quantity of free nanocrystals of the ceramic material; and, drying the resulting quantity of coated CI particles and free nanocrystals to a moisture content equal to or less than 2 wt %.

Abstract:Selective gas-reducing methods for making shape-defined metal-based nanoparticles. By avoiding the use of solid or liquid reducing reagents, the gas reducing reagent can be used to make shape well-defined metal- and metal alloy-based nanoparticles without producing contaminates in solution. Therefore, the post-synthesis process including surface treatment become simple or unnecessary. Weak capping reagents can be used for preventing nanoparticles from aggregation, which makes the further removing the capping reagents easier. The selective gas-reducing technique represents a new concept for shape control of nanoparticles, which is based on the concepts of tuning the reducing rate of the different facets. This technique can be used to produce morphology-controlled nanoparticles from nanometer- to submicron- to micron-sized scale. The Pt-based nanoparticles show improved catalytic properties (e.g., activity and durability).
