Abstract:

A method for treating congestive heart failure (CHF) has been developed that restores kidney renal functions by artificially perfusion of at least one kidney. The kidney is perfused with the patients blood or other suitable perfusion fluid. A catheter inserted into the aorta of the patient has a distal end that supplies the perfusion fluid into a renal artery of the patient. The catheter may be coupled to an implanted blood pump or to an external supply of perfusion pressure. The restoration of kidney function assists the heart by removing excess fluid, urine and toxin from the patient, and by normalizing the patients renin-angiotensin system and other neurohormonal substances. The method is applicable to treat chronic and acute CHF.

Abstract:

An extracorporeal blood circuit is disclosed for withdrawing, filtering and returning blood from peripheral blood vessels. The blood passage in the circuit extends through a withdrawal tube connected to a catheter in a peripheral vein, a filter, one or more pressure sensors and return tube also connected to a catheter in a peripheral vein (which may or may not be the same vein as used for the withdrawal tube). The blood passage is air free, and has smooth passage walls which promoted continuous and uniform flow of the blood through the circuit.

Abstract:

A kidney perfusion catheter assembly is disclosed having an introducer catheter, a renal artery seal, a perfusion tip, and a guide wire. The perfusion catheter provides a flow of supplemental blood to increase the local blood pressure in the renal artery and to perfuse the kidney. The introducer catheter is maneuvered through the femoral artery to the aorta and positioned at the branch of a renal artery. The perfusion catheter tip is telescoped from the distal end of the introducer catheter into the renal artery. A blood pump attached to the proximal end of the perfusion catheter assembly provides a flow of blood that streams from the perfusion catheter tip into the renal artery. This stream of blood increases the pressure and volume of the blood flowing through the renal artery. The catheter includes a seal to block the opening of the renal artery to prevent the runoff of the blood from the renal artery into the aorta. The catheter also includes a brace to secure the perfusion catheter tip in the aorta without distending the renal artery.

Disclosed herein is an apparatus that efficiently clears solutes from blood of patients with renal disease solely by convection and with a single filter that includes a hemofilter, a blood pump for drawing blood from a patient and propelling the blood into a mixing chamber, a mixing and detention chamber where the blood and a non-isosmotic diluent are mixed and are allowed to approach or reach equilibrium (with regard to solute concentration), a mixing element for creating turbulence in the mixing/detention chamber, and suitable tubing for carrying the pumped blood to and from the patent. Abstract:

A method and system for the extracorporeal treatment of blood to remove fluid from the fluid overloaded patient is disclosed that non-invasively measures osmotic pressure across a filter membrane of a blood filter. The filter is permeable to water and electrolytes, but not to blood protein. The osmotic pressure indicates the protein concentration in the blood. Osmotic pressure is used to detect when hypotension is about to occur in a patient, as a result of excessive blood volume reduction during treatment of the blood. Using the osmotic pressure measurement as a feedback signal, the rate of fluid extraction is automatically controlled to achieve the desired clinical outcome and avoid precipitating a hypotensive crisis in the patient.
