Abstract:

A new architecture and operational techniques for supporting high quality live and on-demand streaming multimedia on a data network. By using Helper machines inside the network as data forwarding, caching, and buffering agents, and by forming meshes among Helper machines, advantages of homogeneous, synchronous multicast transmission and of heterogeneous, asynchronous reception are achieved. The architecture provides essentially transparently support to the receivers for near-zero start-up latency, improved playback quality, improved CR-like operations. These are achieved while reducing network and server load compared to todays multimedia networking techniques.

Abstract:

The invention includes a method and apparatus for generating a coincidence count table adapted for determining at least one flow statistic. The method includes receiving a plurality of packets comprising a respective plurality of payloads, comparing payloads associated with consecutive ones of the plurality of packets for identifying at least one simple pattern included within the compared payloads of the consecutive ones of the plurality of packets, for each of the consecutive ones of the plurality of packets, if the at least one simple pattern is identified, processing the at least one simple pattern to form a complex pattern, and for each complex pattern, updating a coincidence count associated with the complex pattern, wherein the coincidence counts are adapted for determining at least one flow statistic.

Abstract:

Traditional networked file systems like NFS do not extend to wide-area due to network latency and dynamics introduced in the WAN environment. To address that problem, a wide-area networked file system is based on a traditional networked file system (NFS/CIFS) and extends to the WAN environment by introducing a file redirector infrastructure residing between the central file server and clients. The file redirector infrastructure is invisible to both the central server and clients so that the change to NFS is minimal. That minimizes the interruption to the existing file service when deploying WireFS on top of NFS. The system includes an architecture for an enterprise-wide read/write wide area network file system, protocols and data structures for metadata and data management in this system, algorithms for history based prefetching for access latency minimization in metadata operations, and a distributed randomized algorithm for the implementation of global LRU cache replacement scheme.

Abstract:

The invention includes a method and apparatus for determining a coincidence count associated with a traffic flow in a network. The method includes receiving a first packet having a first flow identifier associated with one of the traffic flows, comparing the first flow identifier of the first packet to each of a plurality of other flow identifiers associated with a respective plurality of other packets, and determining a coincidence count associated with the first flow identifier based on the comparison of the first flow identifier to each of the plurality of other flow identifiers. The method for determining a coincidence count associated with one of a plurality of traffic flows may be extended for determining respective coincidence counts associated with a plurality of traffic flows. The determined coincidence counts may be used for determining at least one traffic flow statistic.

A system and method for optimizing system performance includes applying sampling based optimization to identify optimal configurations of a computing system by selecting a number of configuration samples and evaluating system performance based on the samples. A system and method are disclosed for managing a data center in terms of power and performance. The system includes at least one system positioning application for managing power costs and performance costs at a data center. The at least one system positioning application may determine a status of a data center in terms of power costs and performance costs or generate configurations to automatically implement a desired target state at the data center.
