Abstract:
An improved multifocal design for IOL is provided. A particular embodiment includes an intraocular lens (IOL) with a foldable optic. The IOL also includes multi-hinged haptics coupled to the foldable optic operable to position the IOL within an eye. Each of the multi-hinged haptics includes a first hinge and a second hinge farther from the foldable optic. The first hinge has a first thickness between an anterior side and a posterior side of the multi-hinged haptic, the second hinge has a second thickness between the anterior side and the posterior side of the multi-hinged haptic, and the first thickness is greater than the second thickness. Another embodiment of the present invention provides a method to correct the visual impairment of an aphakic patient by implanting such an IOL.

Abstract:
An intraocular lens (IOL) for implantation within a capsular bag includes an optic and a plurality of haptics. The optics has an anterior optic face and a posterior optic face joined by a peripheral wall. The peripheral wall includes a straight portion of uniform width extending posteriorly from the anterior optic face to a flare point and a flared optic edge. The flared optic edge extends posteriorly and widens from the flare point and meets the posterior optic face at a sharp optic corner. Each of the haptics is coupled to the optic at the peripheral wall at respective haptic-optic junctions. The flared optic edge surrounds the peripheral wall between the haptic-optic junctions.
A lens delivery system having a cartridge and a handpiece with a lockout feature. The lockout feature helps to ensure that the appropriate combination of cartridge and handpiece is used.
