A method and system are provided for measuring water current direction and magnitude. A plurality of beams of radiation are transmitted radially outward from a location above a body of water. Each beam is incident on the waters surface at an angle with respect thereto. Each beam experiences a Doppler shift as a result of being incident on the waters surface such that a plurality of Doppler shifts are generated. Each Doppler shift is measured with the largest one thereof being indicative of water current direction and magnitude.

Abstract:
An apparatus and method permits measuring of near-direct forward scattering functions in water to enable acceptable underwater imaging for detection, classification, and identification of objects, such as mines. A source of light mounted on a housing member receiving ambient water emits a beam of light along an axis to a scattering detector assembly mounted on the base member. The detector assembly has a central active region disposed in the axis to receive portions of the light beam emitted along the axis and a plurality of concentric active regions are located radially outwardly from the central active region and the axis to receive scattered portions of the light beam. The central and concentric active regions provide signals representative of the magnitudes of the axial and scattered portions of the light beam for determination of the scattering function of the ambient water.

Abstract:
A differential imaging system is particularly efficacious for detecting objects in high dispersion or light-scattering mediums, such as seawater. Such a device especially useful in mine detection. A single burst of illumination is used as the light sensitive portion of the system is gated so as to collect at least two images of reflected light from the same burst of illumination. The first image is modified and subtracted from the second image to remove the common noise, and to further enhance the image of the object to be detected.

Abstract:
A method is presented for detecting a body at sea. A lidar system provided nboard an aircraft transmits radiation at a wavelength in the blue/green region of the energy spectrum towards the surface of the sea. The lidar system is tuned to receive return reflections occurring over a specified wavelength range. A shaped area located near the body is designed to inhibit any return reflections that would be detectable by the lidar system. The shaped area defines a shape that is abnormal for the area of the sea being searched and defines a size that is larger than the body. The presence of the body is indicated by a null return corresponding to the shape and size of the shaped area.
Non-Invasive, Opto-Acoustic Water Current Measurement System And Method
A method and system are provided for measuring water current. An acoustically-modulated beam of radiation is transmitted to a target location on the surface of a body of water. As the beam transits the water, acoustic radiation propagates away from the beam towards the surface and experiences a Doppler shift in frequency relative to the acoustic frequency used for modulation. The Doppler shift is caused by current in the water through which the acoustic radiation transits. The Doppler-shifted frequency is measured as an indication of water current.

Star Wars: Mark Hamill Defends Prequel Trilogy, George Lucas
Recently, the legendary actor sat down for an interview with Vulture where he took time to address the prequel films. It was then that Hamill stuck up for the projects and particularly stood behind Jack Lloyd, the child actor cast as Anakin Skywalker in The Phantom Menace.
Watch for English subtitles of the Huttese jabber jumping off the screen, watch for the pod-racing tournament to go whooshing at ya, and watch out for young Jack Lloyd's line-readings (he's Anakin "Annie" Skywalker). His words have so much more dimension, nuance, and gravitas when you put those clun
