Abstract:

An apparatus and method for drilling a plurality of lateral wells from a main wellbore (10) including a junction joint (16) secured to the lower end of the lowermost casing string (14). The junction joint (16) includes an outer cylindrical housing (18) with a plurality of separate parallel guide tubes or tubular guide members (30A, 30B and 30C) secured to upper and lower plates (22 and 24) of the junction joint (16) and arranged to receive a pipe string. Entrance openings (26A, 26B, and 26C) are provided in upper plate (22) for the respective tubes (30A, 30B and 30C). A guide member (40) includes a small diameter alignment pin (54) and a pair of large diameter projecting pins (50). Upon alignment of guide member (40) with a selected tube (30A) by alignment of small diameter alignment pin (54) with an opening (38A) in upper plate (22), pins (50) are received within the upper ends of the non-selected tubes (30B and 30C) to close the non-selected tubes (30B and 30C). Abstract:

An earth drilling bit with a body having a flat bottom. A plurality of cutting elements positioned on the flat bottom including a polycrystalline diamond cutter. The cutters include an elongate apex with a face on both sides of the apex extending backwardly from the apex. The apex extends generally vertically with a slight rake for providing a chisel surface for acting on the earth even when when the cutter becomes worn. The cutter may include multiple apexes and have zero side rake. A plurality of fluid circulating channels are provided in the flat bottom and vertically along the outside of the body and a plurality of fluid nozzles are directed outwardly at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the body.

Abstract:

A drag rotary bit (10) has a bit body (12) with a center cutter element (34) for projecting from the bottom (22) of the bit body (12) at the axial center of the bit body (12). The center cutting element (34) has a pair of cutters (42) with cutting faces (46) thereon in opposed relation to each other. A pair of opposed relatively long blades (54) are mounted on the bottom (22) of the bit body (12) and extend across the entire bottom (22) of the bit body (12) to the center cutter (34) to divide the bottom (22) into two separate areas. A single nozzle (26) having a large diameter discharge port (28) is provided for each of the separate areas for cleaning the bottom of the hole and washing of the blades.
