Global PR Campaign of the Year 2012 PR Week On the heels of last year’s victory in this category for the Starbucks Brand Transformation initiative, Edelman and the coffee giant took top honors again for their storytelling program around the company’s Global Month of Service. From Beijing to Boston, Starbucks hosts projects that address the unique needs of each community and result in its largest concentrated service effort each year. For example, in Chicago, partners refurbished three dilapidated homes in the Englewood community. To highlight the approach of personalizing involvement for each individual and neighborhood, Edelman decided on a bottom-up hyper-local storytelling program, shifting focus to community awareness rather than a typical “corporate” tale. With a target audience of employee partners, NGOs, and customers, a key objective was increasing participation globally. Placing feature stories in numerous markets across the globe would help achieve that and mobilize partner networks. While Starbucks was initially concerned this path would not generate the same reach as national top-tier press, the results were impressive. “A hyper-local strategy is difficult to do,” noted one judge, “but Starbucks and Edelman executed it beautifully.” Overall, there were 2,157 partner-led service projects as part of the Global Month of Service – up 54% from 2011. Partners and customer participation was secured in 34 countries across five continents. The media certainly took notice as more than 464 million impressions were secured, along with 100 local feature stories. “This was an excellent concept,” added another judge.
