  • Abstract:
A robotic system that includes a remote controlled robot with at least five degrees of freedom and a teleconferencing function. The robot may include a camera, a monitor and a holonomic platform all attached to a robot housing. The robot may be controlled by a remote control station that also has a camera and a monitor. The remote control station may be linked to a base station that is wirelessly coupled to the robot. The cameras and monitors allow a care giver at the remote location to monitor and care for a patient through the robot. The holonomic platform provides three degrees of freedom to allow the robot to move about a home or facility to locate and/or follow a patient. The robot also has mechanisms to provide at least two degrees of freedom for the camera.

Russell J. Redmond - Goleta CA, US
James W. Cuevas - Santa Barbara CA, US
  • Assignee:

  • International Classification:
    A61B 18/18
  • US Classification:
    606 33, 606 48
  • Abstract:
The bipolar modular forceps assembly is a disposable electrosurgical device utilized with an RF voltage supply to weld soft tissue to prevent bleeding when cut or excised. The device consists of two modularly constructed arms arranged in scissor configuration that clamp when the arms are apart and open when the arms are squeezed together. The wires enter from the rear of the device, behind the digit insertion of the upper arm, and run through the interior of the upper arm before reaching the pivot point. From the pivot joint, one wire continues to the bottom jaw and the other wire wraps around the pin bushing in the pivot joint and proceeds to the top jaw. At all times the wires are fully insulated by the insulative cover with the only exposed wire occurring where they enter the device. The bipolar voltage of each wire is transferred to an electrode on each jaw. The electrodes are insulated from surrounding tissue by the insulative jaw, which contains visible markings showing the beginning, middle and end of the electrode. Both the insulative jaw and the electrode are interchangeable and made from moldable material to allow for different sizes and shapes. When no voltage is applied the tool can be used as a blunt dissector.

  • International Classification:
    A61B 17/062
  • US Classification:
    606145
  • Abstract:
A cycling, suturing and knot-tying device is characterized by an arcuate fixed, grooved or recessed way provided in a correspondingly shaped support frame for accommodating a curved needle fitted with thread, and frictional needle-engaging devices provided in the way for selectively engaging the needle and driving the needle in one or both rotational directions to suture a wound with the thread. Selective articulation of the frame and the way and driving of the needle in the way by positioning the frictional needle-engaging devices with respect to the needle are typically effected by manipulation of a pistol-grip operating apparatus having a transmission tube that mounts the frame and the way in articulating relationship and rotates and articulates with respect to the pistol grip and carries various operating elements that interface with the frictional needle-engaging devices in the way. In at least one embodiment needle, direction-adjusting elements are provided in the frame in cooperation with selected devices in the way for determining the direction of needle rotation responsive to manipulation of an interfacing operating element located on the operating apparatus. Auxiliary thread-handling or incrementing and knot-tying devices are also disclosed.
