At age 22, Donaldson became the second publisher of the Tory Weekly newspaper the " Edinburgh Advertiser ", the paper having been turned over to him by his father.
Donaldson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1751.

He was knighted by Edward VII of the United Kingdom in 1907, and was awarded an Doctor of Laws by the University of Glasgow and an Honorary degree Doctor of Divinity by the University of Aberdeen in recognition of his work in Church history.
