Abstract:

A strong-motion force-balance accelerometer system responsive to accelerations along the axis of its housing, and having an annular diaphragm fixed with respect to the housing normal to the axis, the diaphragm having a winding extending around the periphery of the diaphragm and forming with the diaphragm the proof mass of the accelerometer system, a transducer disc fixed to the surface of the diaphragm and operative to flex with the diaphragm and generate a voltage in response to displacement thereof, a magnetic flux path having an annular flux gap around the periphery of the diaphragm, the gap being occupied by the winding, and an amplifier circuit including a forward amplifier connected to receive the voltage generated by the transducer disc and to deliver an output signal in response to displacement of the diaphragm and the circuit including a feed back amplifier connected to said output signal and operative to feed back current to the winding tending to opposed displacement of the diaphragm.

Abstract:

A detector structure and array to be buried in a solid medium either singly or plurally at spaced intervals to detect intrusions such as footsteps upon the surface under which the detectors are buried. Each detector comprises a cup having a diaphragm at one end and a closure at the other end, piezoelectric transducer disc means in the cup and bonded to the diaphragm, the diaphragm being large enough in diameter to achieve good coupling to the medium in which it is buried, especially if it is a particulate medium such as ground soil. A cable joins the cup units, and sealing means are provided for the cup and cable entrance to seal against entry of moisture. Successive detector units may be coupled to the cable with reversed polarities to cancel out frontal disturbances such as seismic events.

Abstract:

A digital recorder and method for digitizing and recording seismic events, the recorder being capable of lengthy stand-by periods during which it records lesser events of little interest in a static buffer and then displaces these events with more recent events when the static buffer is full. The recorder is self powered and controlled by a microprocessor to transfer strong-motion signals representing important seismic events from the static buffer into a static memory which is kept alive by suitable back-up batteries and comprises a cartridge separable and retrievable from the recorder after a major seismic event. The information in the recorder also is accessible through a serial port for reading out to a central data processor. The seismic information is specially compressed and formatted to increase the amount of data recorded by eliminating data that is essentially redundant. The recorder comprises a package designed to protect the electronic circuitry and three orthogonally arranged seismometers in a sealed compartment, and to house the power supply including rechargeable batteries in an easily accessible vented compartment.

Abstract:

A short period seismometer sealed in a housing with an oil-immersed frame supporting a mass suspended for displacement along an axis of sensitivity of the instrument, one end of the mass being merely guided and constrained for axial movement, and the other end of the mass being supported by a spring disc assembly clamped in the frame at its periphery and attached to the mass at its center, the disc assembly including a piezoelectric disc bonded to a spring metal disc on the opposite face thereof from the mass and the piezoelectric disc having a diameter about 0. 68 times the diameter of the spring metal disc to achieve optimum output signal, the mass restoring force being concentrated in the spring disc assembly, and the constraining guide at the other end of the mass contributing only insignificantly to the restoring force.
