Abstract:

An antenna system particularly suitable for use with a satellite in a terrestrial communication system includes first and second signal reflectors which are selectively positionable with respect to an RF signal feed whereby first and second target areas can be serviced. A support structure is provided for the reflectors whereby the first and second reflectors are rotated into operating positions with respect the RF signal feed. The support structure further includes a hinge for supporting the first reflector whereby the reflector can be rotated between an operating position and a stow position. The support structure further includes a second gimbal which allows the second reflector to independently rotate to a flipped position and then pivot to the stow position adjacent to the first reflector with the concave surfaces of the two reflectors in a stacked position.

Abstract:

A writing utensil configurable between retracted and extended configurations is provided. The writing utensil includes a body having an interior volume and an aperture. A reciprocally movable nib assembly is located in the body and includes a nib that, when in the extended configuration, traverses the aperture. To prevent the nib from drying when in the retracted configuration, a sealing element seals the aperture. In an embodiment, the sealing element is a resilient valve element that can be opened by a sleeve slidably engaging the nib assembly. After the sleeve opens the valve, the sleeve slides with respect to the nib assembly to expose the nib. In another embodiment, the sealing element can be a sliding door that is attached to the nib assembly and overlays the aperture. When the nib assembly is moved to the extended configuration, the sliding door slides in a manner that opens the aperture.

A system and method for dynamically generating alarm thresholds for performance metrics, and for applying those thresholds to generate alarms is described. Abstract:

A GPS-at-GEO system is provided that includes a receive antenna design that enables improved tracking of GPS space vehicle side-lobe signals. The receive antenna design is a conical mode helix antenna configured to produce a conical mode radiation pattern, which has zero gain at Nadir and higher gain in the side-lobe signal regions. The conical mode radiation pattern provides several advantages for GPS-at-GEO navigation applications. For example, this mode provides higher gain in the GPS space vehicle side-lobe signal regions for improved acquisition and tracking performance and lower gain at Nadir, providing reduced noise temperature and higher signal to noise ratio.

Abstract:

A very high resolution laser gyroscope system having a phase-locked loop operatively coupled to the output of a laser gyroscope cavity. A difference frequency signal is formed between two output beams from the gyroscope cavity. The phase of the difference signal is compared with that of a reference clock to produce a signal representative of the phase difference between the reference clock and difference signal. The latter signal is amplified and coupled to a coil which produces a field within a Faraday rotator body disposed in the wave propagation path within the laser gyroscope cavity. The phase of the difference signal is thus phase-locked to that of the reference clock signal so that the frequency difference between the two beams in the cavity is maintained constant over a wide range of rates of rotation.
