Abstract:

Methods of and apparatus for coating the glass envelope and predetermined portions of the end caps of a fluorescent lamp with a coating of polymeric material including securing the end caps against displacement, subsequently, preheating the glass envelope and the predetermined portion of the end caps to a first predetermined temperature above the melting point of the polymeric material for a predetermined amount of time; subsequently, masking the electrical connecting pins and all of the end caps except the predetermined portion thereof; subsequently, exposing the glass envelope and the predetermined portion of the end caps to a fluidized bed of powder of the polymeric material for a predetermined amount of time to apply a coating of the powder to the glass envelope and to the predetermined portion of the end caps; subsequently, reheating the glass envelope and the predetermined portion of the end caps to a predetermined temperature above the melting point of the polymeric material and for a predetermined amount of time to melt and fuse the powder on the glass envelope and the predetermined portion of the end caps to form the applied powder into a substantially uniform thick coating of polymeric material and; subsequently, unmasking the pins and the end caps and unsecuring the end caps. Additionally, the glass envelope and the predetermined portion of the end caps may be cooled after reheating to a predetermined temperature and for a predetermined amount of time to quench and clarify the coating of polymeric material. Additionally, the temperature of the fluidized bed may be controlled to provide more uniform coating and pressurized air may be supplied to surround the connecting pins during coating to further prevent coating of the pins.

Abstract:

A fluorescent lamp including a glass envelope having first and second end caps at the opposite ends thereof and each end cap provided with a connecting pin, the glass envelope containing energization means for generating light emanating from the lamp and upon energization thereof a first portion of the glass envelope adjacent the first end cap and a second portion of the glass envelope adjacent the second end cap being heated to a first temperature and an intermediate glass portion intermediate the first and second glass portions being heated to a second temperature lower than the first temperature, and a composite safety coating including first and second substantially light transparent coatings and an intermediate substantially light transparent coating intermediate the first and second coatings, the first coating surrounding and secured to the first glass portion and including an outer end portion surrounding and secured to a portion of the first end cap not including the first connecting pin and including an inner end portion, the second coating surrounding and secured to the second glass portion and including an outer end portion surrounding and secured to a portion of the second end cap not including the second connecting pin and including an inner end portion, the intermediate coating surrounding and secured to the intermediate glass portion and including opposed end portions respectively adjacent and interconnected to the inner end portions of the first and second coatings, the first and second coatings light transparent and non-degradeable to at least the first temperature and the intermediate coating light transparent and non-degradeable to at least the second temperature, upon the glass envelope being broken into glass shards the composite coating maintaining the glass shards and the end caps in association to prevent broadcasting of the glass shards.

Abstract:

A combination drilling and mining head is provided which engages in screwed connection to the uppermost and outermost section of the drill string and allows the tool string to be rotated by the power swivel during both the drilling and mining operations. A lateral connection on the stationary manifold of the swivel head connects to the annular space between the dual conduits for supplying drilling and mining fluid to the tool string, the center or discharge conduit is connected through a swivel for discharging drill cuttings during the drilling cycle and ore slurry during the mining mode. The center or discharge conduit can also be used to supply drilling or mining fluid through the center conduit to the tool string while the lateral connection on the stationary manifold is used to discharge the drill cuttings or slurry pumped through the annular space between the conduits.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus is provided for recovering deep subterranean ore deposits using conventional dual conduit pipe in the tool string. The drill cuttings and ore are returned to the surface by reverse circulation. A combination drilling and mining head is disclosed which permits the outer casing to be driven by the power swivel during both the drilling and mining operations. A hydraulic eductor pump located at the suction entrance to the inner conduit is used to raise drill cuttings to the surface; a separate slurry eductor pump within the inner conduit located only sufficiently below the slurry discharge of the tool to prevent cavitation at the jet is used to pump the ore slurry to the surface. Another embodiment of this invention employs both eductors to raise the drill cuttings and ore slurry to the surface. Valves controlling the flow of fluid to the drill bit, the mining jet and the slurry discharge eductor pump are located within the inner conduit and a novel valve actuating means is disclosed which employs the pressure within the annular space between the conduits to convert the tool from the drilling to the mining mode.
